LAHORE: Who says that women are the only ones crazy about lawn? We have reason to believe that men cooped up in offices are in fact crazier about the product! It is their obsession that in turn feeds the obsession of lawn addicts that are drawn to exhibitions all The Express Tribune talks to a few market players to see how advertising works for lawnover the country.

Given that lawn is a product that sells itself — being the most purchased material in the country — one would think that lawn manufacturers don’t need to bring in the likes of Sonam and Karishma Kapoor for endorsements. But in the face of fierce competition with about a hundred participants in the lawn race, advertising agencies are constantly on edge about standing out and one upping the competition.

Just like women brag about latest fashion acquisitions, men about cars, watches and business deals, lawn manufacturers boast their campaigns with larger than life billboards dotted across the city. One can almost imagine them muttering “I’m bringing Aaminah Sheikh, what have you got?” to themselves, as they cash in on the borderline obsessive compulsive disorder women have developed for lawn.

With news of about Bollywood actors Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Karisma Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri being brought into the lawn ad war this year, The Express Tribune spoke to a few market players to see how advertising works for lawn.

“Advertising works purely on the consensus of the entire team,” says Amir Ahsan of Hussain Mills Limited. “We are bringing in Nargis Fakhri this year purely to raise the value of the brand. Elan has a very elite clientele and our model has to portray the same lifestyle we want our clients to have.”

Faraz Manan from Crescent Lawn, whose lawn is being modeled by Karisma, explains how the campaigns reflect the intent of the brand. “A few brands use them as sales gimmicks, while others use them more tastefully. Our concern is not to get a one-time sale, but to build a long lasting relationship with our fans and consumers. High end super models aren’t a way to get sales. Rather, we see them as people who are the best at what they do, endorsing us because we are the best at what we do,” he says. “We use high end celebs to reinforce our brand equity, and that in the long run, enhances our brand equity and consequently sales.”

Sapphire Group working with Sania Maskatiya this year takes a slightly different take on the matter. “We chose Sana Sarfaraz; actor, model and aspiring humanitarian. This young lady also possesses an admirable professional drive. Determined to pursue a Masters degree in NGO Management, not only does she embody the relaxed elegance of our lawn physically, but an inspirational charisma which both Sapphire and Sania Maskatiya deeply respect as well. We feel she adds prestige to our lawn. Having said that, there is no substitute for the fine quality of designs, fabrics and embellishments; without these, no celebrity or model’s endorsement would be incomplete or adequate,” says Nabeel Abdullah, director of the Sapphire Group.

‘Brace yourself… Asim Jofa billboards are back!’

This was just one of the many Twitter posts on Asim Jofa’s lawn billboards. As always, his campaign has got tongues wagging. Phrases such as “My love does cost a thing”, “A woman is a diamond’s best friend” and “I am nature’s miracle” call out to the senses, as they loom on billboards in Karachi against beautiful hues and ethereal figures.

Muzaffar Manghi, the General Manager at Red Communications and the force behind the latest campaign, talks about the brand’s objective. “We are not trying to sell lawn,” he says. “We are trying to sell a brand. If Aston Martin comes out and sells a doodh ka dabba, people will buy it [because of the brand].”

Referring to Jofa’s flamboyant billboards, Manghi says that the curiosity is what gets people to check out the jora. “Last year, even during a hartaal women came and shopped,” he boasted, adding, “I want to create a scenario whereby if Asim comes up with a $1,000 dollar lipstick, it will sell.”

Manghi describes the trend of using Bollywood faces in Pakistani lawn campaigns as a “different way to approach the same problem”, but feels there is a down side. “Deepika’s face is bigger than the brand she’s representing. So it may be known as ‘Deepika wali lawn’; women will buy it, but should they be buying the face or the brand?” he asks.

At the end, he adds that these billboards are created to generate a buzz about Asim Jofa lawn, and that catalogues and campaigns with pretty models wearing lawn prints will follow.

“Ultimately, it boils down to ‘Is my Deepika prettier than your Priyanka?’; all lawn ads have pretty, tall women wearing a lawn jora — Asim Jofa just does a little more before that.”

Pink Chiffon presented a puritanical pallete with lace trimmings and then moving on to a more colourful presentation with Indian motif block print in classic eastern wear. A one-off was an off-shoulder silk leopard skin print dress worn by model Fouzia.

Eden Robe for kids had tiny tots in smart jackets in deep, formal colours with waistcoats and shalwar kurtas. It was simply adorable the way the boys took to the ramp.

Eden Robe for men featured the same attire in slightly mature form and colours as well as pattern. Velvet pajamas, jamawar sherwanis, Kashmiri embroidered kurtas, Chinese collar jackets, tux with velvet collars, rough-cut jackets and moonlight shimmer fabric were just some of the designs and elements used in creating the collection.

Designer Vasim Asghar’s Moulin Rouge-inspired collection in red and deep black featured a short dress worn by Saima Azhar over sheer red stockings. Loose, billowing fabric was used to create further drama and special effects in the clothes. Fouzia in an oversized v-high neck, a short black sequin dress worn over striped stockings added to the element of surprise which slightly tamed down as the show progressed. Intelligent use of minimal embellishments on such a strong pallete and Iraj and Nadia’s multi-tier long shirts drew the segment to a sensational close.

Sobia Waheed and Sapphire, both of Brands Just Pret, showed a navy blue jumpsuit with silk scarf, handkerchief prints, orange and gold, military green silk dress with calligraphic motifs and matching accessories with prints with mute embroidery, respectively.

Probably the most-awaited segment since the KFW began, the tribute to Mehnaz courtesy Shabs Couture commenced by observing a moment of silence and prayer for the departed soul. What ensued not only warmed hearts and tugged at the heartstrings and was an intensely emotional moment for all and sundry while remembering the legacy left behind by the indomitable singer, and also in many ways symbolizing the undying, resilient spirit of Karachi which the late singer called home.

The collection and accessories were as wacky and crazy as the style sense of the divas of Lollywood during the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s shown to the tune of Mein jis din bhula doon… and other such classic compositions.

Malaysian designer and KFW regular Sharifah Kirana showed form-hugging, clinging classic Hollywood gowns, impressive colour blocking and a line inspired by the concept of hijab in Islamic fashion for women. It showed a highly evolved sense of design and spoke volumes about the market for such products in Pakistan for women who want to dress modestly while maintaining a keen eye on styles and ongoing high fashion trends.

Dawn

Olivia Culpo beat out 88 other beauty queens from six continents at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip to take the title from outgoing champion Leila Lopes of Angola.

Culpo wore a tight navy blue mini-dress with a sequined bodice as she walked on stage for the competition’s opening number. Later in the night, she strutted in a purple and blue bikini, and donned a wintery red velvet gown with a plunging neckline.

Culpo’s coronation ends a long losing spell for the U.S. in the competition co-owned by Donald Trump and NBC. An American had not won the Miss Universe title since Brook Lee won in 1997.

No one seemed more surprised than Culpo’s family, who “looked at her like she had three heads” when told them she was entering the Miss Rhode Island contest last year, her father Peter recalled.

“We didn’t know a thing about pageants,” he said.

She won that contest in a rented $20 dress with a hole in it and then began working out, dieting, and studying current events on flashcards to compete for the Miss USA crown.

Culpo was good enough during preliminary Miss Universe contests to be chosen as one of 16 semifinalists who moved on to compete in the main show. Her bid lasted through swimsuit, evening wear, and interview competitions that saw cuts after each round.

She won over the judges even after tripping slightly during the evening gown competition. Telecasters pointed it out but also noted her poised recovery.

Moments before she won, Culpo was asked whether she had she had ever done something she regretted.

“I’d like to start off by saying that every experience no matter what it is, good or bad, you’ll learn from it. That’s just life,” she said. “But something I’ve done I’ve regretted is probably picking on my siblings growing up, because you appreciate them so much more as you grow older.”

One of those siblings, 17-year-old Gus, was cheering from the front row with his sister’s glittering Miss Rhode Island sash wrapped around his shoulders

Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon, came in second, while Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, placed third. All the contestants spent the past two weeks in Sin City, where they posed in hardhats at a hotel groundbreaking, took a painting lesson, and pranked hotel guests by hiding in their rooms.

After the show, Culpo appeared wearing a white gold crown atop her long brown hair and told a group of reporters she hoped to bring the country some good news in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Connecticut.

“It’s such an honor to be representing the USA in an international beauty contest in spite of all the tragedy that’s happened in this country lately,” she said. “I really hope that this this will raise everybody’s spirits a little.”

The daughter of two professional musicians, Culpo grew up in Cranston and spent her summers at band camp. She has played the cello alongside world-renowned classical musician Yo-Yo Ma, and followed in her parents’ footsteps with performances at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Her father called her the “nerdiest” of her siblings, and her brother recalled that she was “really chubby and sort of weird when she was younger.”

They speculated that the same single-mindedness that helped her master the cello in second grade propelled her rapid rise through the beauty pageant ranks.

With her promotion, Miss Maryland Nana Meriwether becomes the new Miss USA.

The Miss Universe pageant was back in Las Vegas this year after being held in Sao Paulo in 2011. It aired live on NBC and was streamed to more than 100 countries.

The panel of 10 judges included singer Cee Lo Green, “Iron Chef” star Masaharu Morimoto and Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants.

Asked on the red carpet whether he found playing in the World Series or judging the beauty pageant to be more difficult, Sandoval said both were hard.

As Miss Universe, Culpo will receive an undisclosed salary, a wardrobe fit for a queen, a limitless supply of beauty products, and a luxury apartment in New York City.

After a beautiful traditional showcase at the previous fashion week, Nikki Nina’s aquatic collection nosedived this time around. Poorly structured, ill-fitted and carrying large ungainly stains, the collection was a sad testimony to the fact that the duo needs to get their creative apprentice Mohsin Ali back. Screen prints depicting life underwater was too literal an interpretation of the marine theme and sheer tops worn over tank tops and short shift dresses serenading as kameezes with slits over miniskirts, made for a haphazard presentation. They did, however, bring hemlines to a medium length, so kudos for that. Yet, the fact that the duo didn’t adorn their own collection for the finale walk was hint enough that they too felt this was a showcase that was just not good enough.

Hala-lujah
There was a pungent stench of deja vu emanating from Zainab Sajid’s collection that was reminiscent of Zaheer Abbas’s techniques of pleating and drapes with an addition of hefty tassles, and Nida Azwer’s civilisation collection with her use of Hala pottery motifs. It was laudable that she experimented towards pret given her a strong focus on bridals and although this is a start, one had hoped that she would have been more innovative and improved on her choice of fabric.
Drawing the line
A talent that never disappoints, Mohsin Ali’s show made a social comment with a symbolic opening of models drenched in black, making way for a lone, white-clad figure to signify hope emerging from a thick crowd of despondency. Although part of the collection was devoted to depicting darker times, the black in his ensembles coalesced merrily with bursts of colour in tie-dye and screen prints for a unique amalgamation. This had to be Ali’s most commercial collection, which he created deftly without losing his signature desi kitsch. Steering away from subaltern fabrics, Ali played with hynotising stripes in colour blocks and used taweez lockets as accents for a brilliantly constructed awami collection.
Suzani
FnkAsia takes off from their wonderfully crafted ‘Sea Merchants’ collection to create a brooding winter look with their latest offering, Suzani. Although it is the season appropriate to be presenting a winter line, the fact that the fashion week was largely fixated on Spring/Summer, made Fnk Asia’s collection feel out of place. Also, while the basic motifs and general theme stays the same, Huma Adnan makes a sincere effort to create an array of statement jackets in velvet and linen for the winter. While the overall effect of Suzani wasn’t as fun and striking as her previous showcase, Adnan’s attention to detail in styling with complementary accessories like necklaces used as head bands and elf-like shoes made for an interesting presentation.
The Dilkash Collection
In her first solo exhibit, Sania Maskatiya showed her true mettle as a designer, who is urbane and classy and knows how to dress the modern Pakistani woman. Sleek and pristine in her cuts, much like Lahore’s Sara Shahid, Maskatiya proved, in this collection of block prints, balloon dresses, jumpsuits and round-hemmed chic kameezes, that she knows how to make women of her generation swoon. Impeccable draping and immaculately crafted silhouettes, with just the right amount of detailing using copper coins, Maskatiya proved that she knew where to show restrain and where to create effect.
Marachay
Newbie Irfan Ali’s 3D construction of a vibrant technicolour rural Punjab on fabric made for a fine debut if only it wasn’t so much like Mohsin Ali’s interpretation of the same theme. The 3D pockets with Rilli and blossom motifs looked too familiar in their use on Ali’s fanciful dresses, but when the same patterns were used on kimono-esque kaftans and kurtas, Ali managed to make them his own. One would like to see how this young scion manages to take a new dimension on rural heritage and how far he takes flight in the fashion scene.

KARACHI: Pakistan Fashion Week opens with a burst of cuts, colours and a tinge of predictability.
Mast Patang
Akif Mahmood gained acclaim for bringing folk heritage onto the ramp and in the three seasons that he has shown so far, he stays true to that passion of creating themed collections focused on Pakistan’s cultural roots. From a debut with his Kailash collection, Mahmood now took us to the famed rooftops in Lahore where kite festivals are held annually to commemorate the coming of spring. Haveli and kite motifs dominated a rather predictable collection of trench coats and open sherwani cover ups. It’s all well to work with themes, but it’s time Mahmood moved beyond and demonstrated some dexterity with his cuts and silhouettes to quench our doubts that he just might be a one-hit wonder.
Aurora Luminescence — The Glowing Murk
Debutante Zonia Anwaar, a recipient of the Lux Style Awards (LSA) academic scholarship, showcased a collection that played on waves and structured ruffles in shades of aqua and purple. A tad bit monotonous and ill-fitted, with the focus on detailing being the mushrooming troughs and crests, the showcase did not reveal the designer streak Anwaar is expected to display.
Neo Natives
Maria B’s Pocahontas-inspired collection of flared bottoms, jumpsuits and bubble tops — in asymmetrical cuts in colour blocks of earthy tones, scarlets and blues — was definitely her most pret-satisfying offering to date. The prints drew motifs from ancient cultures, from the Aztec to Persia, to lend the collection a cosmopolitan feel. Replete with hemp shoes and bags, the collection was a shout-out to the 1970s, with the sleek groovy look of long hair and braided headbands that was fun, supremely comfortable and ‘campus’ cool. This was a collection that will certainly heat up college grounds this summer.
Myth
Zaheer Abbas stayed true to his Issey Miyake-esque pleating aesthetic, which delved into elegant Grecian togas that sashayed on the catwalk with fragility. It was an immaculate collection with minimal details (dabka this time around, instead of the tiny bells that Abbas used previously) in a colour palette ranging from cream to burnt orange.
Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design
Hoodies, boxed broad ensembles and futuristic pieces characterised the students’ show, just like it does each year at the PIFD graduation. As always, the accessories made more of a mark than the clothes themselves, which lacked the structure and seamless fit that one expects from a designer. Yet as expected, it was the most vibrant show of the day with creative choreography (models were seen parading as puppets) and styling.
Foliaceous
Nida Azwer did jungle fever with a twist. Instead of a call to the animal kingdom, this was a call to the jungle itself — to the barks and foliage, whose textures she explored with cut-out fabric juxtaposed with flowy silk, leafy screen prints. Azwer used her signature gold embossing and her typical broad borders on the angharkhas, which she brought back in vogue from her very first showing. Overall, the designer’s collection was very safe and commercial, and is more fit for the racks than the ramp.

The Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) has for the first time invited an Indian American fashion designer, Parna Ghose, to display her ethnic Indian collection.

DFW Spring Summer 2012 is being held at The Arena, Dubai World Trade Center, Oct 20-24 and Ghosh, who designs under her label Pure Elegance, will showcase her couture collection in the grand finale.

“My primary clientele is modern, successful South Asian women. They are constantly balancing between their external existences in professional life with their internal values at home, with families and in social environments,” Ghose said in a statement.

“My goal is to help them manage this disparity and strike a balance through style and fashion,” she added.

Pure Elegance is the first design house ever from the US to be invited to showcase ethnic Indian fashion like sarees, lehengas, salwars at a major international fashion show.

DUBAI FASHION WEEK® ANNOUNCES ALLIANCES WITH INTERNATIONAL FASHION COMPANIES

Partnership reaffirms Capital Marketing’s commitment to regional fashion design industry-

Dubai, UAE, 19 June 2011: Capital Marketing, the owner of Dubai Fashion Week (DFW), has announced its strategic association with Cranberry Middle East (CME) and International Fashion Innovators (IFI). This alliance will see DFW continue to grow and develop as the most important fashion design trade event in the region.

CME has extensive experience in fashion, lifestyle & entertainment sectors across Asia & Middle East. Rohit Sabikhi, CEO, CME has continued working with the industry regionally and has been involved in the development of DFW. Simon P Lock, CEO, IFI brings a wealth of global experience to the team, having produced fashion events in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific. The two companies will add strength to the DFW brand, combining regional knowledge with international expertise.

IFI CEO, Simon P. Lock, has been appointed as Creative Director of DFW. He is a veteran in the industry, having founded Australia Fashion Week in 1996. He has been Festival Director of both Singapore Fashion Festival and Hong Kong Luxury Week in addition to being Senior Vice President & Managing Director, IMG Fashion and Models, Asia Pacific. Along with his team at IFI, Simon has produced fashion events for a number of the world’s leading designers in London, Paris, New York and Asia including Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Salvatore Ferragamo, Zac Posen, Collette Dinnigan, and Calvin Klein. He is a recipient of Australian Fashion Laureate 2010 award.

Commenting on his appointment, Simon Lock said: “My life’s work has been to aid the growth and development of established and emerging designers. I am very excited to have this opportunity to work with designers from the Middle East and help them get the recognition they deserve, both locally and on the international stage. Cranberry ME CEO, Rohit Sabikhi, will maintain his role as Event Director of DFW. His previous experience includes associations with Fashion Design Council of India, IMG (International Management Group), various international fashion weeks, and his expertise lies in fashion design industry growth & development, brand activation, sponsorships and event marketing & management.

Cranberry ME and International Fashion Innovators involvement with DFW will be effective from next season, which will be Spring/Summer to be held in October 2011 (dates to be announced). In the lead up to the event, DFW will be holding workshops with designers and sponsors this week.

DUBAI FASHION WEEK® DESIGNER APPLICATIONS OPEN, BY INVITATION ONLY

Dubai, UAE, 17th July 2011: Capital Marketing, the owner of Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) has now opened the application process inviting designers to participate in the next season of DFW Spring/Summer 2012 (SS12), which will run from 20th to 24th October 2011 at The Arena, Dubai World Trade Centre. There are three categories which designers can apply for; the individual collection show, the group collection show and the emerging talent show.

Designers partaking in the individual collection show category must be established designers who have consistently proven to be operating a viable business over a number of seasons. The group collection show category is open to established designers with a proven production capability who are continuing to build their brands’ reputations and gain increased national and international exposure and sales.

Finally, showcasing some of the most promising talent in the region, is the emerging talent category. As a symbolic reflection of DFW’s unwavering commitment to discover and support hidden talent from the region, the emerging talent category returns for its 10th season, as a launch platform for young and upcoming designers.

Commenting on the opening of designer applications and the upcoming season, Simon Lock, the newly-appointed Creative Director of DFW said, “My greatest joy has been working with designers and helping them realize their dreams, whether it be launching themselves in their home market, expanding their business internationally or just introducing them to others in this amazing global business.” “Whether a designer of Abayas, haute couture or ready-to-wear collections, DFW is designed to deliver real return on the investment designers make through participation in DFW. Four shows would be held with 13 designers participating including those from India.
Line up of fashion Designers from Pakistan and India in the two-day event including Ali Xeeshan, Bina Sultan (BNS Couture), Fahad Hussain, Faheem Abbas, Gulzeb Asif, Kosain Kazmi, Mona Imran, Saba (La Chantal), Saba and Misbah (Hijab), Sadaf Arshad, Saira Rizwan, Shayanne Malik (Saman Zar) and Shaziya Kiyani (Shaziya Bridal Gallery). Gutam Rakha, Rahul Rastogi and Shibani Rastogi (Rabani and Rakha) are especially flying in from India with their collection for event.

Well, the news from the fashion industry is that Style 360 in collaboration with J&S is staging Pakistan`s first Bridal Couture Week. The aim of this exercise is to bring talent together under one roof to showcase the latest and upcoming trends and provide people a platform to exhibit their creations and connect with the public.

The bridal week will run from November 26 to 28 and the three-day activity will include an exhibition and a fashion show. This fashion gala at the Expo Center will feature 18 fashion shows by various designers.

Wedding celebrations are traditionally given a great importance in our culture and every segment of society is willing to spend on this occasion. According to the organizers, it will be a one shop event for all wedding dresses and accessories.

The week will feature designer creations for the bride and groom, wedding planners, jewelers, florists and furniture and shoe designers.

The MidEast Watch and Jewellery Show is the only jewellery fair in the Gulf that is held twice a year with an exhibitor retention rate of nearly 85 per cent. It is one of the unique shows in the region that is keenly awaited by both the traders as well as shoppers.

The upcoming 31st edition of the show is expected to occupy a total exhibition area of 16,000 square metres and host more than 450 master jewellers from around the world, offering you an opportunity to be seen along with leading global names in the jewellery business.

The show also enjoys the confidence of many well-known names in the watch and jewellery industry, who not only showcase their best products but also line up a series of launches and customization offers for clients from the region.

The popularity of the MidEast Watch & Jewellery Show can be gauged from the fact that the previous edition of the fair – the 30th – received 53,340 visitors during its five-day schedule.

It was held at Expo Centre Sharjah from April 5-9, 2011, and featured more than 450 master jewellers from all over the world.

The show also witnessed an impressive presence of country pavilions from Hong Kong – China, India, Italy, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. These country pavilions showcased the season’s most exquisite and intricately crafted jewellery creations, both traditional and contemporary to discerning visitors.
The 30h edition of the MidEast Watch and Jewellery Show, which was held at Expo Centre Sharjah from April 5-9, 2011, attracted a total of 53,340 visitors from 32 countries.

This included both trade and general visitors. Among the trade visitors, a majority were from the GCC States as well as Egypt, Iran, Iraq, India, Pakistan, Russia, and Thailand. A substantial number of the general visitors were from UAE.

The Show hosted over 450 master jewelers from Italy, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, India, Turkey, Lebanon, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and the UAE.

The national pavilions from Italy, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, and India, attracted considerable attention at the event.

Almost all the exhibitors expressed satisfaction with the response received at the Show and several high value sales were reported.
