5 Trends We’ve Spotted At Australian Fashion Week So Far

Australian Fashion Week is just kicking off, and the runways are already giving us a snapshot of the biggest trends we’ll be seeing this summer (and a temperature test on what the fashion girls are wearing on the streets right now). This year marks a historic Australian Fashion Week, the first to be held by a local, not-for-profit body, the Australian Fashion Council. Held in May each year, the week typically points to the resort, giving us a feel for what we’ll wear to our summer soirees. Early collections point to a summer defined by soft, flowing silhouettes, tonal pastels and tailoring.

Quick notes from the front row? ELLE Australia‘s fashion editor Jordan Boorman noted “lots of fringing from Carla Zampatti and Frontier, plaid, buttery pastels and sorbet shades from whispers of pink through to misty greys.”

We’ll be keeping our eyes on the runway all week. Here are the key trends we’ve noted so far.

AFW is out of step with Cannes and voting firmly with the naked dress, and the naked skirt and the naked blouse. It’s hard to find a show on the schedule that hasn’t featured some form of translucency.

Fringing was one of the biggest trends on the international Autumn/Winter runways and on the Frontier runway Esse and Paris Georgia showed us how to wear it for the warmer months.

Following the vogue for all things vintage gowns were fit for 1930s screen sirens at Carla Zampatti and Matine where cocktail dresses in soft silks featured softly cinched waists and tapered skirts.

From Carla Zampatti to Common Hours and Lee Matthews we’re in for a sorbet summer. Sheer fabrics appeared in soft, almost diluted, tones of lavender, peach and pea green offer a unique take on pastel.

Tailoring

Tailoring is another trend we predicted for 2025 at the start of the year (around the time Saint Laurent sent Bella Hadid suited down the runway and an American Psycho remake got announced) and it’s continued to dominate at AFW, albeit with fresh interpretations. Courtney Zheng sent sweeping belted tailored looks down the runway while at Carla Zampatti suiting felt sculptural. Shirts and ties were all over the rainy streets outside Carriageworks so we’re happy to see we’ll be suiting up come summer.
