The Met Gala 2025 red carpet is officially underway, with attendees arriving at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to ascend the iconic steps. As is customary for the Met Gala, Anna Wintour and a few of the evening’s co-chairs — Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and Pharrell Williams — were the first to arrive on the carpet.
This year’s Met Gala theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, and as always, it marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition. Drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity and is the first exhibition to focus on menswear only since Andrew Bolton became the Costume Institute’s Curator in Charge.
Per Vogue, the exhibition is organised into 12 sections, each representing a different characteristic that defines dandy style: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool, and Cosmopolitanism.
“Dandyism can seem frivolous, but it often poses a challenge to or a transcendence of social and cultural hierarchies,” Miller said in a statement. “It asks questions about identity, representation, and mobility in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality, and power. This exhibition explores dandyism as both a pronouncement and a provocation.”
This year’s dress code follows suit, as “Tailored for You”, which suggests that guests are being encouraged to embrace personal style, and of course, exceptional tailoring and creative reimaginings of menswear staples.
