Are The Devil Wears Prada 2 Looks…Good?

Sequels are a tricky business. Any time a legendary piece of media is unnecessarily revisited decades after its release, much can go wrong. (And Just Like That.) So when it was announced that the most iconic fashion film of the 21st century was being revived, the pressure was on. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is officially happening, so here’s everything you need to know.

What’s the plot and cast of The Devil Wears Prada 2?

All the original main stars are back—Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci—but this time, the storyline is much different. Where the first film took place during the golden age of print, the second film is reportedly rooted in the modern-day decline of the publishing business.

Streep’s Miranda Priestly is at the end of her career as editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine, and she must go face-to-face with Blunt’s Emily Charlton. The twist? Emily is no longer her overworked assistant but now an executive at an LVMH-style luxury group with powerful advertising dollars. While it’s not yet been revealed how Hathaway’s Andy Sachs will fit into the mix, the plot subverts the original power dynamics. The first film ended with Sachs leaving fashion media to pursue “hard-hitting” journalism. But judging from the outfits, this film will follow her reinstatement in the realm of Runway.

How’s the fashion in The Devil Wears Prada 2?

There’s no denying the aesthetic impact of the 2006 film. Gisele Bundchen’s sultry little glasses. Meryl Streep’s timeless cerulean speech. Anne Hathaway’s outfit-switching montage. These moments have shaped culture. Could any reprisal even get close to their level? Perhaps not, but The Devil Wears Prada 2 is shaping up to be a chic affair.

Filming for the sequel started this summer, and each outfit reveal has reliably sparked volatile opinions. (Someone commented “The Devil Wears Zara” on FASHION’s post about Miranda Priestly’s new look.) But we’d argue the outfits feel correct. Miranda’s sporting sleek trenches and an icy bob; Andy’s oscillating between masculine office-wear and A-line layers; Emily looks at home in a characteristically sharp suit. It’s tempting to tentatively declare that, yes, actually, the outfits in The Devil Wears Prada 2 are quite good. See them all below.

Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada 2

Since filming kicked off in June, Hathaway has been spotted around New York City in full Andy Sachs mode: rushing through crowds, schlepping shoulder bags and frantically crossing the street. It’s like Christmas morning.

First, a patchwork Gabriela Hearst maxi dress, accessorized with a Runway garment bag and a Fendi purse. The snapshots show her looking visibly stressed out on the phone—perhaps trying to track down the next Harry Potter manuscript?

While filming, she’s also worn an array of 2020s-era corp-core suits, from a grey blazer-and-trouser set to this pinstripe Jean Paul Gaultier vest look. The vintage Coach briefcase is a nice touch: a wishlist-item accessory rooted in reality. Some of her looks emit a grown-up version of Andy Sachs comfort, including the Agolde denim maxi-skirt and white Toteme tank she wore to film on July 21. The star of the outfit was, obviously, the chunky velcro Chanel sandals (a nod to the famous boots?), which she rewore with a denim Re/Done jumper later that day.

There have also been references to the original Devil Wears Prada costuming, like the brown suede blazer and coordinating fringe bag that felt reminiscent of her iconic chocolate leather Prada jacket. The look that really piqued the internet’s interest is this all-white ensemble comprising barrel jeans, a billowy T-shirt—seemingly with a cape?—and Prada pumps. It may not be realistic for an editor’s salary, but it paints an accurate picture of a moneyed 40-something New Yorker who shops at The Row and reads Substack.

On July 28, Anne Hathaway was spotted filming in an expertly-layered ensemble: a blue pinstripe dress paired with a satin red vest. The photos show her sitting outside an office building, sipping a coffee and looking slightly despondent. So, on brand.

The terrifying editor-in-chief is back, and so is her side-swept bob. All the Miranda Priestly looks thus far have involved strong outerwear, statement shoes and blacked-out sunglasses—the uniform of a woman who will make you feel unworthy in the fashion closet. Fans got the first glimpse at the updated character on July 23. Photos flooded feeds of Meryl Streep in a leather column skirt, purple blouse and a minimalist trench. The reactions were mixed, but this was only the first in an array of new Miranda Priestly looks.

A few days later, Streep was pictured in a crisp collared shirt and trousers, paired with striking red heels and a camel coat. She’s holding a slim leather pouch close to her chest. A mock-up of the latest Runway issue for her review, perhaps?

Next, Meryl Streep was pictured on The Devil Wears Prada 2 set alongside Stanley Tucci, wearing a monochrome grey skirt suit with a statement necklace chain and gold belt. The images show her and Tucci walking and talking together, with Hathaway trailing behind them, looking left out. Just like the old days.

We got our first taste of Emily Blunt’s character Emily on July 29, reviving her beloved red lob and dripping in Dior. The office-wear outfit is cinched and severe, involving a pinstripe Wiederhoeft corset and a black and white palette. She looks, appropriately, mean and fabulous. Continue Reading
