Boohoo to produce own apparel via new “model factory”

LEICESTER – Fast fashion brand Boohoo has confirmed that it will begin producing its own clothes at a “model factory” it’s purchased in Leicester in the coming months, as the brand looks to take control of its stock and distance itself from suppliers found to pay staff just £3.50 an hour.

Company CEO, John Lyttle, said he was “shocked and appalled” when cases of poverty-line wages being paid to garment workers came to light last month, despite an undercover report by the Sunday Times confirming that the multi-billion-pound Boohoo brand was one of these sites’ customers.

With Manchester-based Boohoo believed to source around 40 per cent of its apparel from Leicester, it’s wondered whether brand-owned supplier factories could pave the way for greater future transparency, whilst still attaining the quick turnaround times that Boohoo has become renowned for.
