Can Crochet Be Sexy? Kylie Jenner Says Yes

Visits: 33

Kylie Jenner has mastered the sultry Instagram selfie. The reality-star-turned-beauty-mogul’s success is based on her ability to look good on the gram, but the appeal of her snapshots isn’t solely about poses or lip kit previews. Jenner’s immaculate outfits of the day feature the latest designer fare alongside up-and-coming labels her fans ought to know about. Her latest Instagram posts offer a crash course in autumnal dressing thanks to monochromatic pieces from Bottega Veneta and the Australian label Stone. Yesterday, when Jenner shared images of herself in pieces from Daniel Lee’s pre-fall 2020 collection she completed the look with one of Stone’s woven halter tops. The unbuttoned chocolate brown leather shirt, pants, and chain-link embellished purse may have been shining examples of Lee’s minimalist aesthetic, but it was her unique top that pulled the entire look together.

A touch of woven texture to contrast with all Lee’s glossy leather, the Stone halter was eye-catching. Its combination of a traditional crochet technique and body conscious silhouette connects with the look of the moment. Sexy staples rendered in unusual textures are trending, think Katie Holmes in her cashmere Khaite bra, or Dua Lipa promoting Future Nostalgia in a mohair GCDS crop top. Such pieces’ tactile appeal is obvious—knits and fuzzy fabrics were made to be touched—but they serve another function. Because of the heavy, warm materials, they become a transitional piece and serve as a revealing silhouette for the colder months.

As appealing as Jenner’s halter was, it’s ironic that the only element of her outfit that wasn’t Bottega Veneta featured weaving, as the Italian brand is known for its Interracio weaving technique. This has been a constant within its collections since 1966. Still, at $300, the Stone top is a fraction of what an item from the luxury house would cost. Given that it’s already been spotted on fellow selfie experts, including Emily Ratajkowski and Jenner’s BFF Anastasia Karanikolaou, expect to see the piece on your feed very soon.
