The Gist

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Cate Blanchett is something of a maverick when it comes to fashion. She never fails to offer her own unique, playful take on a tried and tested trend. She is constantly pushing sartorial boundaries and always making a statement with a surprising, playful look. And with her latest ensemble, she has really outdone herself.
The actress appeared at The Serpentine Gallery Summer Party 2025 on June 24 in London and she took the summer theme to a whole new level. Her nautical look goes beyond beach-ready—in fact, she was, quite literally, wearing the beach itself. Her structural corset top was covered in real seashells and pearls arranged in an artful, almost armor-like design and held together with giant safety pins. The top was from Dilara Findikoglu’s fall 2025 collection, and was part of the Turkish designer's “Venus from Chaos" show.

Under the sea-core
Blanchett paired the artful top with a fringed midiskirt with a mermaid silhouette—naturally. She completed the look with pointed toe heels with fringing around the sides. The look certainly puts a new spin on TikTok's sardine girl trend—it might be better described as shipwreck girl.

A work of nautical art
Blanchett's latest under the sea-themed look comes after a number of other inventive red carpet outings. who could forget her plunging blazer with a truly giant golden bird necklace? Art. Or what about her top literally made of blonde hair extensions? Very Cousin Itt. And then there was her mummy gown which she ingeniously paired with an off-the-shoulder necklace.

But Blanchett doesn't just know how to rock a bold, visionary look—she is also an advocate for sustainability when it comes to fashion. Just last week, she teamed up with Prince William to tour the Colorifix laboratories and learn about environmentally-friendly clothing dye.
“I think it’s imperative that we reimagine fashion: not only how it’s made, but how we value it, and how we consume it,” she said to British Vogue at the event. “I think creativity can flourish within sustainable limits.”
Evidently, she puts these principles into practice. In fact, Findikoglu, who designed her latest top, is known for her sustainable practices, such as using upcycled vintage garments, scraps from the studio, and organic materials—like seashells.
