The eagerly awaited Cannes Film Festival 2025 has finally arrived, and très jolie looks are already gracing the red carpet.
While much attention is given to American awards nights like the Oscars and Grammys, nothing quite compares to the fashion spectacle of the Cannes red carpet. Since 1946, the festival has served up two weeks of glamour, while offering an entrée into the crème de la crème of new cinema for those willing to look beyond the sartorial splendour.
This year, however, there’s been a bit of controversy. Celebrities were thrown a last-minute couture curveball with a ban on naked dresses and any gown deemed “obstructive.”
Cannes is known for two things: cinema and outré fashion, and we can assume the news was a couture curve ball for many celebrities and their stylists. After all, Bella Hadid, the arguable queen of Cannes, hasn’t covered her nipples at the festival in two years. Where does this prudishness come from? We can only speculate. But it certainly won’t stop us from soaking in the stars as they make their way to the Soixantième Theatre.

After all, Cannes has been home to some truly iconic fashion moments—from Kate Moss arriving arm in arm with Johnny Depp in the perfect little black dress (1950s vintage Jean Dessès, not Depp’s love life) to Madonna in her Jean Paul Gaultier cone bra (a flagrant rule violation, given the Cannes charter is so conservative it suggests skipping short skirts).
Celebrities have a history of ignoring the festival rules, and we’ve already seen some violations.
Not Bella Hadid, though. The suddenly blonde bombshell passed with flying colours, opting for a leg-baring rather than chest-baring Saint Laurent gown. Will other guests follow suit? We’ll have to wait and see.
