The winter solstice might be the shortest day of the year, but did you know it’s also renowned for being a profoundly powerful period for manifestation?
Scientifically speaking, the winter solstice (which falls on Saturday, June 21 in 2025) is the name given to the exact moment when our half of the earth (the Southern Hemisphere) is tilted at the farthest position from the sun. As a result, less sunlight reaches the earth, giving us the ‘shortest’ day of the year, and the ‘longest’ night.
Specifics aside, in the astrology world, the winter solstice is also regarded as one of the most auspicious dates, and a potent time for bringing your dreams into reality. It’s good timing, since by the time winter solstice comes around each year, most of us have reached a point where we’re cold, tired, and wishing for warmer days. Don’t fall into the trap of letting your seasonal depression make you believe you’ve reached the point of the year where you need to wait for new years to bring about change, in fact, this is the moment to refocus and make your dreams a reality in the next six months. (Yes, it’s possible.)
Though winter solstice isn’t typically the coldest time of year, it is the darkest, which can leave us all feeling a bit resentful of the city we live in. If you’re not jetting off to Europe like some of your friends, taking a moment of stillness and gratitude at this time can also help you to appreciate the beauty of winter. Sunset walks are highly recommended at this time.
Ready to learn how to make the most of this year’s winter solstice? Below, astrologer Kristy Gray weighs in.
Why Is The Winter Solstice A Good Time To Manifest?
Aside from the middle of the year energetically making us all yearn for some positive change, there are more concrete astrological reasons it’s a good time to manifest your dream life. “Not only is the winter solstice the longest night of the year, but it arrives alongside the sun moving into the constellation of Cancer, marking a moment to nurture and tend to our dreams,” Kristy explains to ELLE Australia.
Manifestation is governed by the law of attraction which, put simply, is the idea that positive thoughts bring positive experiences. So in order to make the most of this opportune evening, it pays to get clear about what you want – and importantly what you don’t want – ahead of time.
“Our intentions need to be crystal clear, any obstacles we may face are accounted for, and intentional action towards our desires is a must,” Kristy says.
“This is an opportune time to reflect back on any intentions you may have set at the astrological new year during Aries season, and assess what aspects of your past need to be released in order for you to step forward and set your dreams into motion.”

How To Manifest This Winter Solstice?
While exactly how you choose to manifest can be as simple or as complicated as you like, Kristy has outlined a manifestation ritual to try out this winter solstice:
- Begin your manifestation ritual by preparing a detox bath with two cups of magnesium salts, 1/4 cup of baking soda and a few drops of lavender oil. Cancer is a water sign and this water ritual will help you to align with this energy.
- Light a candle to represent the element of fire and also to honour the light returning after the longest night.
- As you immerse yourself in the water, close your eyes and connect with your aspirations, visualising the feeling you wish to cultivate as you move towards your manifestations.
If the instruction to connect with your aspirations feels vague, we’d suggest removing self-judgement from your mind as best as you can. Follow where your mind takes you and allow yourself to breathe and relax, in order to delve deeper into your deepest desires. Remember that you know best, so whatever deep yearning you feel rise up in your body is likely the correct thread to follow.
What Is A Fire Ritual And Why Should You Try It?
A popular ritual to partake in on winter solstice is a fire ritual. The lighting of a fire — whether it be a candle, a bonfire, lanterns, or an incense — symbolises the return of the sun after the longest night of the year, and fosters hopes of renewal.

We know that we could certainly do with freshening up our energy and feeling revitalised as we head into the latter half of the year, and as Kristy recommends below, it’s also a powerful method of manifesting your desires.
According to Kristy, holding a fire ritual is exactly as it sounds:
- Begin your fire ritual by writing down our intentions on a piece of paper.
- Light a candle and bring your attention to the flame, visualising your manifestations becoming your reality.
- Importantly, focus on how you want to feel throughout this process, so that your thoughts and feelings inspire you to take intentional action
- When you feel ready, burn the paper (safely), and release your intentions into the universe.
