If there’s one love story that still fascinates the world even decades later, it’s that of America’s closest thing to royalty, John F. Kennedy Jr., and fashion publicist Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. In the ’90s, the pair became an immediately iconic couple, thanks in large part to Kennedy’s family name, but quickly also for the mystery surrounding Bessette. Now, their romance has been reimagined for the small screen, with new series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.
This week, the first instalment of Ryan Murphy’s series has been released and already, fans are talking about everything from the relationship shown on screen to CBK’s restrained yet covetable ’90s style.
Set against the backdrop of 1990s New York, the show follows the pair as they get together, tracking their engagement through to their secret wedding and the intense scrutiny that followed until their tragic deaths in a 1999 plane crash. Inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s biography of Bessette, the series leans into the mystique that followed the relationship.
Relative newcomers Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon step into the impossibly chic shoes of JFK Jr. and Bessette for the show, supported by Naomi Watts as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy. The result is a beautifully produced series that portrays the tabloid spectacle their relationship became along with a speculated behind the scenes look into the notoriously private Bessette.
The first three episodes of the nine-episode drama were released on Disney+ on Valentine’s Day, and new episodes are dropping weekly, on Fridays.
