Garment factories ‘targeting pregnant workers’

DHAKA – Garment factories in Bangladesh have been accused of targeting pregnant women and trade union activists as they downsize their workforces amidst the ongoing impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Fears have been raised that 1.8 million garment workers are likely to lose their jobs in Bangladesh where brands cancelled or suspended orders worth more than US$3 billion as their stores closed due to COVID-19.

With orders slow to pick up, despite many countries now emerging from lockdown, activists claim manufacturers are using the pandemic to weaken unions and purge ‘undesirable’ workers.
