Gwyneth Paltrow Says There’s “A Lot—A Lot” Of Sex With Timothée Chalamet In Marty Supreme

Timothée Chalamet has made it clear he wants to be one of the greats and, in the new trailer for Marty Supreme, it’s clear he’s playing a character with the same hunger—just for ping pong. And his co-star and love interest, Gwyneth Paltrow, has had some choice words about their sex scenes together.

The trailer for Josh Safdie’s (of Uncut Gems fame) solo feature has dropped, and it’s promising a funny and seriously stylish comedy. In one beat, Chalamet tries to chat up Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays a movie star Marty sets his sights on. Her trademark poker-straight blonde is swapped for a retro curled bob (complete with setting pins) and a bemused look. It seems ping pong isn’t the only thing on Chalamet’s mind; he tells her, “I’m something of a performer too,” gesturing towards his picture in the Daily Mail.

If Safdie’s trailer is any indication, expect a period romp that’s part a parody of man’s indomitable ability to take themselves and their passions seriously when nobody else does, a stylish period drama and a sports-movie-fever dream. The cast is stacked—Odessa A’Zion, Fran Drescher, Tyler Okonma (Tyler, The Creator), Abel Ferrara— but we’re most excited to see Gwyneth Paltrow back on the big screen after a fifteen-year hiatus.

Fashion (and beauty) heads, you’re fed. Marty Supreme leans into mid-century gloss, with costumes by Miyako Bellizzi (Safdie’s Uncut Gems, Good Time). Bellizzi’s eye for “real-people” wardrobes dialled to cinematic eleven is all over the trailer: Paltrow’s pin-set bob and chestnut-gold glasses (both she and Chalamet are rocking the slutty little glasses trend), Chalamet’s sharp suits and tanks, and a bit of splashy Old Hollywood.

Paltrow, who counts Marty Supreme as her first major film in years, admits she was initially indifferent until daughter Apple Martin explained the cultural cachet of A24—and, yes, Timothée Chalamet. Apple’s reward? Watching Mum have, in Paltrow’s words, “a lot—a lot” of sex on screen. “I mean, we have a lot of sex in this movie,” she told Vanity Fair.

Early leaks from the set showed Paltrow and Chalamet in a steamy embrace, including a viral Central Park scene with Paltrow in a red satin look and opera gloves. But the actor says their chemistry didn’t just appear out of thin air.

In a May 14 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Paltrow said kissing Chalamet—23 years her junior—felt “weird.” “It’s like you’re making out with someone that you don’t… you’re not in a relationship with them,” she said. “It’s, like, very mechanical.” She described it as “a choreography, but involving tongues,” and was notably unmoved by his boyish good looks. “I was like, okay, great. I’m 109 years old. You’re 14,” she quipped to Vanity Fair.

The generational differences didn’t end there. Having been off set for 15 years, Paltrow was irritated by intimacy coordinators. “There’s now something called an intimacy coordinator, which I did not know existed,” she told Vanity Fair. Paltrow was exasperated when the intimacy coordinator asked Paltrow if she’d be comfortable with a particular move. “I was like, ‘Girl, I’m from the era where you get naked, you get in bed, the camera’s on.”

While she acknowledged in the interview that intimacy coordinators are a positive step for Hollywood (Paltrow was one of several actresses who went on the record for The New York Time’s expose of Harvey Weinstein claiming the producer made sexual advances towards her when she was 22, and bullied her after she turned him down) she said ultimately she felt she and Chalamet had the situation in hand. “We said, ‘I think we’re good. You can step a little bit back,’ ” Paltrow said. “I don’t know how it is for kids who are starting out, but…if someone is like, ‘Okay, and then he’s going to put his hand here… I would feel, as an artist, very stifled by that.” Between the deliberately awkward romance, Safdie’s jittery charm, and Bellizzi’s immaculate 1950s wardrobe arc, Marty Supreme looks like a stylish comedy about a man who takes himself (and his passions) very, very seriously.
