Has FKA Twigs Just Announced Her Next Album With A Fake Pregnancy?

FKA Twigs has given birth to plenty of ideas over her career, but this time, she’s really leaning into the metaphor.

The British singer and performance chameleon sent the internet spiralling with an Instagram post that showed her suspended on a pole in a lavender bikini, hand resting tenderly on what looked like a growing baby bump. Cue the collective gasp. Was Twigs really expecting? Not exactly. The “bump” was prosthetic, part of a surreal announcement for her next album, Afterglow.

She broke the news first onstage at the Lowlands Music Festival in the Netherlands on August 16, telling the crowd: “It’s true. I am pregnant. I am full and abundant and ready to give birth. Her name is Afterglow, and my labor shall commence next month.” It was part confession, part performance art, and entirely Twigs.

Fans seemed in on the bit. “Pregnant w that new album,” one commented under her post. Another joked, “pregnant w SUCCESS.” By the time her longtime collaborator, photographer Siniša, shared behind-the-scenes shots of Twigs in the same look sans bump, the mystery was solved: no baby, just a very on-brand album teaser.

If the stunt feels familiar, it should—Twigs also wore a prosthetic belly in her 2015 “Glass & Patrón” video. But Afterglow isn’t a rehash. It’s the highly anticipated follow-up to Eusexua, the experimental third LP she released in January, and the evolution of July’s single “Perfectly,” which she teased as the first glimpse of this new chapter. “If EUSEXUA was the tip of the tongue, PERFECTLY is the oesophagus… I wonder what lays in the belly of the beast” she mused on Instagram.

Romantically, Twigs has been linked to photographer Jordan Hemingway since 2023, though she’s kept that relationship largely out of view. She was also engaged to Robert Pattinson for three years, before they decided to go their seperate ways in 2017.

For now, the only love story she’s choosing to spotlight is the one between artist and audience. And if Afterglow is the baby, we’re all already godparents.
