As they get closer and closer to the throne, Prince William and Kate Middleton are showing time and time again that they’re keen to do it their own way.

And by it, of course, we mean lead the royal family, which they will one day do (hopefully in the far distant future, as we’re hopeful that King Charles will be on the throne for a long time to come). The Prince and Princess of Wales are eschewing formality when it comes to walkabouts and royal engagement, and a “natural development” in their public life has helped them seem more relatable than royals of yesteryear.

That “natural development”? Well, it involves kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. William and Kate frequently talk about their three kids while on royal duty, and royal commentator Gareth Russell told GB News that William and Kate enjoy sharing “funny” and “sweet” anecdotes and insight into their home life at Adelaide Cottage—a departure from, say, Queen Elizabeth, who reigned for 70 years and died on September 8, 2022.

“I don’t think there’s any tactic behind it, I think it’s genuinely that the Prince and Princess of Wales are involved and affectionate parents,” Russell said. “All of those stories that they tell are clearly being told by involved and loving parents, and sometimes they’re quite funny, and sometimes they’re quite sweet.”

Russell added that “It’s just more common today to share these kinds of anecdotes publicly, whereas maybe 30, 40, 50, 60 years ago, things were just generally more formal.”

So, while yes, Queen Elizabeth and King Charles kept anecdotes and stories about their respective immediate families more private, William and Kate often bond with those on royal engagements through sharing sneak peeks into their kids’ lives—and it’s but one example of the Prince and Princess of Wales wanting “to do things a little bit differently.”

“I think it’s quite a natural development,” Russell said. “And also, it shows how comfortable William and Catherine are in conversation with people.”
