I was recently invited to a black tie wedding. The catch: we were camping. That’s right—I’m expected to dust off my finest finery, most expensive perfume and toe-tangling heels, all while applying my makeup in a tent, fighting off bugs and sinking into the mud. What the hell has happened to wedding dress codes? In its purest form, a wedding guest dress code is a vibe check. It tells your friends, family and soon-to-be in-laws how they can best present themselves at your event. At its best, it’s a gentle nudge telling your cousin to swap his Molson Canadian hoodie for an ill-fitting Moores suit. At its worst, it’s a highly Type A mood board, transforming attendees into walking blush and sage décor. But either way, the point is to problem-solve—to provide clarity and help your guests help you. You can’t control bad taste, but you can at least contain it. So when words like “festive,” “dressy-casual” or “black tie optional” pop up, it makes a mockery of the entire scheme. While we (unfortunately) can’t control your friends, we can empower you to make the best fashion choices even under the most confusing of circumstances. Below, we break down what to wear to a wedding (and every kind of wedding)—no tent required.

Unless you’re attending Prince Nikolaos of Greece’s wedding, you may very well never come across this wedding guest prompt. But in the off-chance you change social circles, white tie is the most formal of the formal. Think a moderate Met Gala. Opulent ballgowns with long trains are encouraged. Opera gloves, diamond jewellery and even a fascinator are too. Invest in nice cufflinks and a silk bowtie, and keep it all classic with a black and white colour scheme. If you’re need of a reminder, may we suggest rewatching this Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey zinger. [content_module id=”1″]

After years of loungewear and Zoom ceremonies, black tie evening attire is having a major moment. To make the most of it, treat it like your own Oscars red carpet (definitely stay away from the Grammys!). Women should wear floor-length wedding guest dresses in rich-looking materials such as silk, satin or chiffon, and stick to singular colours. Heels are expected and accessories like dangly earrings, clutches and shawls add a flair of extra formality. [instagram-oembed url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/DMNuM-OsBc3/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=czFhdHd4dDg1bGJy” /] For men, a tux is most likely mandatory, but you could get away with a dark suit if you run it by the bride. This is not the time to take out your fun socks or novelty dress shirts. Stick to classics like white button-downs and clean dress socks—not the ones you wear to the gym! Also, bring out both the bow tie and pocket square—and yes, they have to match. A shiny black Oxford or designer loafer will finish the look nicely. [content_module id=”2″]
Formal Wedding Dress Code
[instagram-oembed url=”https://www.instagram.com/reel/DLZ7gVDA4zV/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=dzUyaW9uNnowYnpy” /] The difference between “formal” and “black tie” is a small one, but the biggest change can be found in the details. Where black tie has strict guidelines, formal leaves a bit more room for interpretation. For women, long wedding guest dresses are still expected (ankle-grazing is totally fine), but you could also opt for a chic jumpsuit if you accessorize it right.

Men will still need to wear a dark suit, but no tux. A tie, not a bow-tie. And black dress shoes, not brown. Think of what you wore to prom, just updated by a few decades and remove a few pimples. [content_module id=”3″]
Cocktail Wedding Dress Code
[instagram-oembed url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/DHjB7tPAW7_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=eWF2aTV4YzA2bmZx” /] Let me be clear: just because the dress code says cocktail, it does not mean you should wear what you’d wear with your friends on a night out! Instead, midi or knee-length dresses should be your go-to. Pleats and other textures are a great way to add style without compromising on polish, and strapless or spaghetti straps can also help achieve the perfect…er…cocktail of formal and fun.

For men, still wear a matching suit jacket and bottoms but feel free to experiment with colour. A deep navy, dark green, charcoal grey or rich burgundy suit can beautifully fit the vibe while also showing off your aesthetic. Also, a tie is not a requirement but a suggestion. If you forego the accessory, be sure to balance it with either oxfords, loafers, derbies or dress boots in a dark colour. [content_module id=”4″]
Semi-Formal Dress Code
[instagram-oembed url=”https://www.instagram.com/p/DHzlJ5_Okkh/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MW54aDhscTN4ZDlhbg==” /] Perhaps the most elusive of the wedding guest dress codes, semi-formal is the cousin to business casual. You still need to look polished and put together, but not dressy. For women, that translates to a short dress with heels. You could also do a blouse and silk skirt with some statement jewellery.

Men could get away with a more casual jacket or blazer with suit pants. Remember if you go casual on top, you should go more formal on the bottom and vice versa. Think: something you would wear to a nice dinner or birthday party. [content_module id=”5″]
Casual Dress Code

Pay close attention to the environment and match your outfit accordingly. A wedding in the sand means heels are practically pointless, so you should sport some cute sandals. What about a windy locale? May we suggest a maxi dress or linen pants to prevent any unnecessary flashing? Also, the temperature may call for a specific sartorial solution like a breezy dress shirt or fall coat.

In general, men can’t go wrong with a short or long-sleeved button-up shirt, relaxed chinos in linen or cotton, and leather sneakers. Women, you’re best bet is a cotton dress, in either midi or mini lengths. [content_module id=”6″] Continue Reading
