I only mean to brag a little when I say that I have perfected my morning curly hair routine. Granted, it has taken me 20 years, but if you have curly hair, you know that it is a living, breathing entity that is hard to control. That being said, I’m going to share with you my secret sauce, the combination that has my curls defined, voluminous, and eliciting compliments from friends, yes, but more impressively, strangers on the street.

There are three products in my  routine—I don’t know what straight-haired folks have to do, but this many steps is pretty standard among my curly-haired brethren. This little routine will run you a total of $75 (which I consider to be incredibly reasonable), and the products will last you a minimum of nine months. My foolproof regimen is so solid, you’ll almost get tired of hearing that you have “enviable” curls.

When I wake up, my hair is always matted and flat, and my curls are either weak or nonexistent. Wetting the hair is key to activating the curls, so I begin by spritzing my hair with my water-filled Tangle Teezer bottle

Olaplex No.10 Bond Shaper Curl Defining Gel

If I were, for some ungodly reason, restricted to just one hair care product, it would be Olaplex’s Curl Defining Gel. It gives my curls tighter definition and some grit—when they’re too soft, volume falls away and I end up looking like a cocker spaniel.

This is a very thin gel, too, which makes it quite hard to mess up—I’ve packed it onto my strands without negative recourse. Plus, unlike most gels, it doesn’t leave behind a single trace of crunchiness or unnatural texture.

And, of course, it’s formulated with the celebrity-loved brand’s proprietary bond-repairing (i.e., strengthening and repairing) technology.

Then there is Shirley Jane’s under-the-radar Curl Creme. I use half a pump (or less) and comb through my strands with my fingers, focusing on the outer strands. This has a creamy/lotiony texture and some other magic that obliterates frizz and adds shine to my hair, even when it’s embarrassingly dry. It helps with soft, touchable definition.
