Some trends have earned their place as bona fide seasonal staples. Think suede boots in the autumn, faux fur coats in the winter, and pastels in the spring. While summer boasts a bevy of its own locked-in styling essentials—from raffia bags to vivid hues—perhaps none is so consistent as the humble espadrille. This year, a specific iteration is making waves, and everyone seems to be seeking a proper pair of Mary Jane espadrilles.

Popular as they are, it feels wrong to refer to such a timeless piece as a trend. Espadrilles first originated back in the 1300s, and were popularized in the 19th century by poets, artists and creatives who wanted footwear that suited their bohemian lifestyle. Today, you’re just as likely to spot a pair on your favorite celebrities and influencers as the cool local working at Montauk’s beachiest boutique. I picked up a fresh pair of Castañers for myself just a few weeks ago at New York’s stunning Printemps location downtown.

9 Mary Jane Espadrilles for Summer 2025

Given fashion’s recent fixation on ballet flats, it’s no wonder a pair of Mary Jane espadrilles has been deemed summer’s hottest essential. Their natural fiber soles are extremely comfortable and durable, making them a much better choice for the warmer months than a stiff leather flat that lacks breathability. As for styling, feel free to swap them in whenever you might’ve worn another flat or more casual sandal style. They pair well with dresses and skirts, but also add a summery ease to denim and linen pants.

Ahead, nine delightful Mary Janes espadrilles I can’t recommend enough. The hardest part is picking your favorite pair.

These classic espadrille Mary Janes get a modern upgrade thanks to metallic leather uppers, which perfectly set off the natural jute soles for a fun, unexpected contrast. Plus, the gold hardware means you can style these with silver and gold jewelry.

Mesh ballet flats have been all the rage for months now, so it’s no surprise that summer’s top shoe looks even better in mesh. These Dolce Vita flats have a sweet rounded front and toe cap detail that provides just the right amount of toe coverage.

Rothy’s The Espadrille Mary Jane

Rothy’s are notoriously comfortable, so it’s no surprise its take on the trend is taking over my For You Page. These are also especially durable, with a knitted midsole reminiscent of the traditional espadrille jute that sits atop a bonus sturdy outsole.

Once you’ve got your go-to espadrilles locked in, don’t hesitate to get creative when it comes to colors and patterns. Stripey espadrille Mary Janes like these just scream summer, and make a great swap for flip flops when heading to the pool or beach.

Madewell The Remy Mary Jane Espadrille

Just as color options are endless, exploring espadrilles in various textures and fabrications is a must. If sheer mesh feels too bold, consider this woven leather style from Madewell. The chocolatey brown weave looks expensive AF, in my opinion.
