Moving across the world (and back again) is no small feat, and somehow, I’ve managed to do this four—yes, four—times within the last three years. After accepting a dream job offer in Italy in 2022, I found myself packing up my life and preparing to move halfway across the world from New York. As exciting and stressful as that experience was, I wanted to make sure at least one thing was going to bring me a sense of comfort and security: picking the coziest airport outfit.

I’ve become somewhat of an expert in putting together comfy airport looks. Flying back and forth for work events, holidays, visa appointments, etc. has forced me to streamline what I lay out the night before a long international flight. I try to keep a few things in mind: comfort, practicality, and ability to be layered. Does this sweatshirt have pockets that I can shove my phone or boarding pass into while rolling my carry-on to my gate? How easy is it to take on or off if I get too hot or cold? Is this zipper going to bother me while I attempt to take a ZZZquil-induced nap to avoid inevitable jet lag? These are just some of the questions that run through my head.

Below, I’ve gathered some of my top picks that are the recipe for a perfect airport outfit.
