Moving across the world (and back again) is no small feat, and somehow, I’ve managed to do this four—yes, four—times within the last three years. After accepting a dream job offer in Italy in 2022, I found myself packing up my life and preparing to move halfway across the world from New York. As exciting and stressful as that experience was, I wanted to make sure at least one thing was going to bring me a sense of comfort and security: picking the coziest airport outfit.
I’ve become somewhat of an expert in putting together comfy airport looks. Flying back and forth for work events, holidays, visa appointments, etc. has forced me to streamline what I lay out the night before a long international flight. I try to keep a few things in mind: comfort, practicality, and ability to be layered. Does this sweatshirt have pockets that I can shove my phone or boarding pass into while rolling my carry-on to my gate? How easy is it to take on or off if I get too hot or cold? Is this zipper going to bother me while I attempt to take a ZZZquil-induced nap to avoid inevitable jet lag? These are just some of the questions that run through my head.
Below, I’ve gathered some of my top picks that are the recipe for a perfect airport outfit.

Abercrombie Long-Sleeve Tuckable Scoopneck Tee

Abercrombie & Fitch
$40
Looking back at the airplane bathroom selfies I’ve taken over the last few years, it’s almost predictable how often I would find myself wearing some iteration of a long-sleeve white tee like this. It’s perfect for layering and neutral enough to go with a number of outfits.
Darong Two-Piece Lounge Set

Amazon
$37
This affordable set is truly what I picture in my head when I envision the perfect airport outfit. Comfy? Check. Pockets? Check. Effortlessly matching? Check.
Free People Miranda Sweater Pant Set

Free People
$128
If I’m taking a flight where I know I’ll be landing during the early afternoon or daytime in general, I usually will opt for something a little more elevated (but cozy nonetheless). This cute knit sweater set from Free People is perfect for hopping off the plane and rushing to grab a much needed catch up lunch with a friend.
Madewell Midweight Hoodie Sweatshirt

Madewell
$83
This is exactly what I mean when I talk about an ideal layering piece that makes an airport outfit. The midweight quality of this hoodie brings enough warmth and comfort, but won’t be too bulky if I need to throw something over it or take it off during TSA check-in.
Below, shop some more of my airport go-tos, including cargo track pants and the softest jogger set.
