Break-up anniversaries are always special; you can celebrate how far you’ve come, reminisce about what a so-so partner they were, mourn the past, or do a combination of all three. Jennifer Lopez is approaching the first anniversary of filing for divorce from Ben Affleck and, in true J.Lo fashion, she’s marking the milestone.

The singer released her single “Wreckage of You” on Tuesday, insisting that she’s “better than ever” while reflecting on a romance that sounds a little like a train wreck.

The Grammy nominee introduced the song while performing in Spain, telling the audience it “came to [her] when [she] was up all night one night.”

“The love I want, the love I need, it starts in me. Now I found my way here I’m gonna stay there.” “Thank you for the scars you left on my heart, showing me that stars shine brighter in the dark,” she continued. “I won’t fall apart because of who we are, or your broken parts.” Finally, Lopez sang, “Now watch me climb out of the wreckage of you.”

The Meaning Of ‘Wreckage Of You’ Explained

Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on 20 August 2024, after two years of marriage. The couple—who dated in the early 2000s, ended their first engagement in 2004, then reunited in 2021—were together for roughly three years this time around.

Both have enjoyed roller-coaster love lives. Lopez has been married four times and engaged six, while Affleck has been engaged three times and married twice (incidentally, the stars are both Leos).

In a 1999 interview with Playboy, Ben Affleck admitted he was often a less-than-ideal partner. Asked if his previous girlfriends were “pissed off,” he responded in the affirmative:

“Mostly, yeah,” Ben replied. “Probably justifiably so…  “Probably justifiably so. If I were the next guy to go out with them, I’m sure I would be nodding in agreement about what an asshole their ex-boyfriend was. It’s not like I was a womanizer or physically abusive or psychologically abusive or whatever. It’s just that these relationships never end well.”

“I think what happens is, I end up wanting to be out of the relationship,” he admitted.

“During the course of a relationship, if you get dissatisfied and unhappy and don’t say something, if you don’t deal with it right then, it just festers and stays there. So instead of saying, ‘Look, don’t do that, please don’t act this way,’ I go along with it until I just don’t want to be in the relationship at all.”

“I can’t necessarily blame her at that point since I’ve developed such a passive-aggressive rage that I have no sympathy and tell her, ‘Well of course I didn’t call you. If you weren’t such a nagging, shrewish harpy I’d call you’,” Affleck reflected sagely.

“But that hopefully is something I’m growing out of,” the then 27-year-old surmised.

In 2016, Affleck’s ex-wife Jennifer Garner hinted he hadn’t matured quite as much as he’d hoped. “He’s the most brilliant person in any room…the most generous,” she told Vanity Fair. “But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.” Affleck and Garner divorced amid rumours of infidelity, with Us Weekly reporting he dated his children’s nanny months after the split was announced.

What Jennifer Lopez And Ben Affleck Have Said About Each Other Post Divorce

Lopez and Affleck have remained publicly amicable since their split, which was finalised earlier this year. Lopez was sanguine when comedian Nikki Glaser interviewed her for Interview Magazine in October 2024: “Sometimes, Nikki, it’s going to work out great. And sometimes it won’t. And that’s f—ing OK, too. I was thinking about this time in my life, and I’m like, ‘That’s not what I thought it was going to turn out like.’ And then I thought, ‘No, this is exactly where I needed to be, to lead me to where I want to go.’”

Affleck, meanwhile, has sung Lopez’s praises. In November that year, he lauded her performance in Unstoppable, saying, “Jennifer is spectacular.”
