- The special appearance Monday is in honor of the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which marked the end of World War II in Europe.
- Kate’s latest appearance is part of her gradual return to royal duty following her cancer diagnosis in 2024; she is now in remission, she announced in January.
As she continues her gradual return to royal duty, Kate Middleton joined husband Prince William, kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other members of the royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony today to honor VE Day.
VE Day on May 8 is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and marks the end of World War II in Europe. The royal family is holding events all week to commemorate the anniversary, and the Wales family of five and the King and Queen were joined by other members of the royal family on the balcony Monday, including Princess Anne, Prince Edward, and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. The royal family took part in a flypast, including the iconic RAF Red Arrows closing the show, leaving plumes of red, white, and blue smoke in their wake. The flypast honored the brave men and women who fought and died in World War II.

William and Kate are also expected to mingle with war veterans and their families at Buckingham Palace—poignantly, this will likely be the last anniversary where a considerable number of veterans serving in World War II can attend, Tatler reported. The royal family will also take part in a Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey on Thursday that will end with a concert in Horse Guards Parade later that evening—though it’s not known if William and Kate will be there for those events.

Back in November, royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith told People after Kate attended Remembrance events that month, “You can’t say she is back…but she is coming back,” adding of the Princess of Wales that “she is doing it in her own way and at her own pace, and carefully.”

In March, after the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey that month, Bedell Smith told People that Kate “has been very good at managing expectations, and it’s wise for her to downplay it a bit, because when she does more than people anticipated, it has a greater impact.”
