If you’re not immersed into the world of TikTok, the social media app that faces a possible ban in the U.S., then allow me to explain its “little shirt, big pants” trend to you. It all began with the user @microwavedtuna, who offered up a simple style challenge: “Show me your big shirt, big pants. Now show me your little shirt, big pants. Now show me your little shirt, little pants.” And so on. The tight top, loose trousers combo is a look that’s become quite popular this summer among TikTok teens and celebrities. Katie Holmes has just put her own stamp on the fit, and she’s not the first star to do so this summer.
Holmes hit the streets of New York City this weekend sporting a classic white tank top with a pair of high-waisted, wide-leg denim jeans. The silhouette is perfectly on-trend. The pants harken back to the infamous JNCO jeans of the ’90s, which were so wide-legged they could practically double as parachutes. The new take, however, is a tad more streamlined and modern: Holmes’s pair is just voluminous enough, and she balanced it out with sleek accessories such as crisp white sneakers and a hefty silver chain necklace.
Though the look is nothing new (see Katharine Hepburn, TLC, Avril Lavigne, or Phoebe Philo for examples), it’s becoming the official look of summer. Last week, actor Sienna Miller did the white tank, wide-leg pant combo with an affordable Mango pair. Model Bella Hadid has worn an extreme crop top with carpenter pants as well. The takeaway? Put those skinny jeans to bed (for now).
