Leighton Meester’s Comfy French-Girl Look Included My Spring Denim Obsession

It’s so cute.

I’ve been in the midst of a denim refresh—or rather, an entire closet refresh. Every March, I get bit by the spring cleaning bug, which propels me to get rid of the things that no longer serve me. This time around, that included a lot of jeans. I’ve been craving some new fits and styles, too, which is another reason I was inspired to kickstart my refresh, and, in a very kismet way, Leighton Meester just confirmed I do, in fact, need these jeans that I’ve been quietly obsessing over.

Meester was photographed out during Paris Fashion Week in a very French girl look, and that’s one of the reasons I’m so into the ensemble. It has an ease to it—that inherent je nais se quois that so many French-girl outfits ooze. She wore a simple white cashmere baby tee from ME+EM (it’s pricey at $215, but it’s the most luxe white tee I’ve seen). Also from ME+EM, she wore a pastel green cropped houndstooth coat on top—very Blair Waldorf-coded, if you ask me. She slipped into brown suede shoes, the perfect pairing with her bootcut patch-pocket jeans, which you need, stat.

Plenty of denim trends are flooding the fashion scene; it seems like every day, a new celeb hops on the flare denim game, with Amal Clooney being a notable addition this week. Baggy jeans are a no-brainer, for the ease of wear, comfort, and internet coolness, but Meester’s patch-pocket jeans, a quiet trend in the denim world, fit right in with the sartorial shift toward retro-inspired jeans. Not to mention, the teeny tiny detail adds a flattering touch, too.

Patch-pocket jeans are pretty straightforward; they come in any silhouette you like from cropped to flares, but the distinguishing factor is, of course, those front patch-pockets that are practical and cute. They serve a functional purpose, as they hold essentials like lipstick or a small wallet, but they’re more eye-catching, and thus, more interesting, than regular, shmegular pockets. Of course, they add a ‘70s flare to the blues, too, and given fashion’s love for nostalgia, it makes sense.

Patch-pocket jeans are a bit more interesting than normal jeans thanks to the simple addition of the standout, well, patch pockets. I just got my first pair and plan on adding more to my rotation, so shop the styles I’m eyeing, below.
