Today marks Princess Lilibet’s fourth birthday, and her mom Meghan Markle posted a sweet tribute to her daughter for the occasion on her Instagram.

On June 4, the Duchess of Sussex shared two black-and-white photos of herself and Lilibet—one of Lilibet likely recently, wrapped in her mother’s arms on what appears to be a boat. Both Meghan and Lilibet’s hair is windswept, and while Lilibet’s face is partially covered by Meghan’s hand, it’s the most close up shot of the 4-year-old’s face that has been seen in recent memory, as Meghan often photographs her children from the back or from the side.

The second photo shared is of Meghan—her freckles on full display—holding a newborn Lilibet in her arms. “Happy birthday to our beautiful girl!” Meghan wrote on Wednesday. “Four years ago today she came into our lives—and each day is brighter and better because of it. Thanks to all of those sending love and celebrating her special day!”

When Lilibet—who Meghan and husband Prince Harry affectionately call “Lili” and whose name is an homage to the late Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nickname—was born in 2021, Harry and Meghan said of their daughter that “She is more than we could have ever imagined.” After announcing they were expecting again on Valentine’s Day that year, Lilibet was born Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, joining older brother Prince Archie, who had just turned 2 years old the month prior.

“We remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe,” Harry and Meghan wrote on their Archewell Foundation website shortly after her arrival on June 4. “Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family.”

Since Meghan relaunched her Instagram on January 1 of this year, Lilibet has appeared on it with gusto, from being a jam taste tester to gathering honeycomb with her mom Meghan saying she was “Harvesting honey with my little honey. (Like mother, like daughter; she’s even wearing my gloves).” When As Ever launched its first range of products in April, Meghan even introduced a desert called “Chantilly Lili,” which she called “a delicious dessert named after our darling daughter,” adding that it was “As special and sweet as she is.”

Lilibet even features on the homepage of Meghan’s lifestyle brand’s website, and told People of that decision that “Being able to have my own little girl, as I’ve spent so much of my life championing the rights of girls and women, and to be able to see this as a multigenerational story—Archie is, of course, included in that, my husband is, of course, included in that—but I love the heritage feeling of it and knowing this is something that I can create in front of my daughter and teach her what it’s like to be a working mom. This is something that hopefully can be part of her legacy, too.”

On her podcast “Confessions of a Female Founder,” Meghan shared with Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd that Lilibet often jumps on her Zoom calls with her, sharing on the April 8 episode of her podcast, “She’ll be sitting there on my lap during one of these meetings with a grid of all the executives…I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Of Archie and Lilibet, a source told People earlier this year that “The kids are adorable. They’re incredibly smart, articulate, and fun.”
