Mia Goth’s ‘Frankenstein’ Wardrobe Is Pure Gothic Opulence

More imagery from Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has dropped, and they’re doing nothing to dissuade us from the feeling that this might be the sexiest zombie movie ever. Think Interview for a Vampire for the Walking Dead crowd. Oscar Isaac is taking the role of Victor Frankenstein, looking both dapper and very stressed, while Jacob Elordi will put his 6’5 frame to good use as the hulking monster. He’s played some profoundly unlikeable characters in his time, from the abusive boyfriend Nate Jacobs in Euphoria and a controlling Elvis in Sophia Coppola’s Priscilla.

But while we’re delighted to get a first look at Elordi’s disfigured (but still chiselled) visage as the titular monster, it’s Mia Goth’s looks that are sending us into a fashion frenzy.

Mia Goth will play Elizabeth, Victor Frankenstein’s adopted sister and fiancée in the novel. She’s placed on something of a pedestal, described by Victor as a “saintly soul” and “heaven-sent.” We don’t know what spin scream-queen Mia Goth will take on the character, but we do know her wardrobe is hauntingly beautiful. At first glance at the film, she appears decked out in opulent cerulean and sapphire hues, wearing a multi-strand opal choker and a face-framing Peacock feather fascinator.

Other stills suggest Goth’s costumes aren’t all we’ll have to look forward to. In one scene, a young Victor’s mother towers over him, a sheer red veil billowing from her sculptural headdress as attendants dress in stark white behind her.

Guillermo Del Toro’s films are known for their lush and often surreal visuals, and if Goth’s look is anything to go by, we’re in for a sartorial treat. Costume designer Kate Hawley, who hails from New Zealand, knows her way around a puff sleeve and a period horror, having worked on films and TV shows such as Sleepy Hollow, The WitchOnly Lovers Left Alive, and Crimson Peak.

Below, find everything we know about the Frankenstein adaptation.

What Is Frankenstein About?

Frankenstein is the latest adaptation of the 1818 novel by Mary Shelly. It tells the story of young scientist Victor Frankenstein, who becomes obsessed with the concept of creating life. Frankenstein succeeds in his mission, assembling a living creature from body parts, but when he confronts the reality of his creation, he’s filled with horror and abandons it.

His monster, or “Frankenstein’s monster” as it’s referred to, doesn’t take kindly to the rejection and sets out to wreak vengeance on its creator. If the plot has you wondering how old Mary Shelley was when she published Frankenstein, we don’t blame you. The plot explores disturbing themes about parenting, marriage, and love, revealing an author with talent and experience well beyond her surprising years. All themes Guillermo del Toro is guaranteed to expertly tease out in the film.

Verified snack Oscar Isaac will play Victor Frankenstein and can be seen in the trailer in sweaty, frazzled form. Mia Goth, who appears wearing a dramatic emerald green outfit, will play his love interest. Other actors on the call sheet include Charles Dance, of Game of Thrones fame, Christoph Waltz, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley who also appeared in del Toro’s Pinocchio, Lars Mikkelsen of The Witcher and Christian Convery from Sweet Tooth.

Interestingly, Andrew Garfield was originally slated to play Frankenstein’s monster but left the project due to scheduling conflicts. We have a feeling the 6’5 Elordi will be up to the job.

Guillermo del Toro is known for creating beautiful and thought provoking monster pics, from dark historic fairy tale Pans Labyrinth to the disquietingly erotic fish-flick The Shape of Water. His films always touch on our deeper fears, whether it’s the powerlessness of childhood or the importance of love in the face of prejudice. So, we likely to get some Themes with Frankenstein.

Speaking at Cannes Film Festival del Toro shared his thoughts on the movie. “Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes? For the first time, I considered that. It’s an emotional story for me. It’s as personal as anything,” Variety reported the director telling press. “’m asking a question about being a father, being a son… I’m not doing a horror movie – ever. I’m not trying to do that.”
