“These shorts must be the most ridiculous things on planet earth,” the actor told Dakota Johnson.

The actor Paul Mescal knows his way around a pair of sporty shorts. He’s made a name for himself on the style front since his big on-screen debut back in spring 2020—and if the hornily popular silver chain he wore as Connell Waldron, his character in the Hulu series based on Sally Rooney’s novel Normal People, was the initial shot, then the retro O’Neills short shorts he wore a few weeks after the show premiered (to pick up a bag of Walkers prawn cocktail crisps and a couple cans of pre-mixed gin and tonic, of course) was the chaser.

This thigh-skimming legacy has followed him, and Mescal, who chatted with his former Lost Daughter co-star Dakota Johnson for an Interview magazine editorial published on Tuesday, is surely aware of it. Unsurprisingly, one particular photo from the shoot, which features Mescal wearing a pair of skimpy shorts with a leather trench and thigh-high boots by Bottega Veneta, has made the rounds on social media today, just as Mescal predicted it would in their conversation.

“I think people would go wild for me and you in this matching outfit, standing side by side,” he told Johnson, who replied, “It’s really a strong look. You do look good in short shorts. Can you ask to keep them?” Mescal—who, earlier in the interview, called the shorts “the most ridiculous things on planet earth”—declined. “I don’t want them. [Laughs] I’ve got a pretty extensive short shorts wardrobe,” he said. We know he does, and he knows we know he does.

Mescal is one of many riding the short shorts wave, alongside Donald Glover (and, hopefully with a little gumption, you). And even if it’s getting cold wherever you happen to be located, showing some thigh is certainly one way to turn up the heat. And if shorts shorts are not your thing, divert your eyes away from Mescal’s thighs to Robert Pattinson and Travis Barker, whose femurs we may never see again.
