Twice a year—the middle parts of spring and fall, specifically—we get a magical time of transitional weather for getting dressed. The days are tangibly chilly, with just enough warming sunshine. Yes, I’m talking about the glorious stretch known as Hoodies and Shorts Season. It’s a go-to off-duty look seen on style-inclined celebrities like Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, Jonah Hill, and Jacob Elordi. But there is one undisputed king of the hoodie-and-shorts combo: Pharrell Williams.

He’ll wear the pairing on stage at a massive musical festival. He’ll wear it in the studio. It’s also a go-to when attending high-wattage events that find him bumping elbows with high-fashion royalty. And last but certainly not least, it is indeed a look he turns to for his days off, whether he lounges on his artful sofa or rides around on his motorbike.

The always-stylish Williams has undoubtedly found an outfit template he likes and has rightfully run it back time and time again. His globe-trotting lifestyle means he’s constantly in the type of just-right weather that supports the pairing. (Looking at his Instagram, I lost count at around a dozen hoodie-and-shorts fits, and that was only scrolling back to March.) His dedication to the look is unmatched.

Now, even for the non-Pharrells among us, the hoodie-and-shorts combo tends to be a pretty failsafe template, an outfit that can read as cool without trying too hard. Just focus on nailing the proportions: you want to go boxy and oversized with the hoodie and contrast that baggy silhouette with a shorter cut of shorts. (You don’t want to be drowning in fabric, so leave any Robert Pattinson-level cargos for another day.) Go bold with color and play around with texture. A prime Pharrell example is this pink hoodie paired with glossy leather shorts. (His diamond Tiffany shades certainly don’t hurt the look, either.) And lastly, don’t shy away from your closet’s best accessoriesgreat glasses, a stylish hat, non-boring socks, and the waviest sneakers you can find.

Much of the country is currently reaching the tail end of this year’s hoodie-and-shorts season. Breathe it in while it is still here. With any luck, we’ll get a few more looks from Pharrell before the too-cold weather of late fall arrives. (Either way, we just rounded up 25 of today’s best hoodies—and they’ll look just as great with pants, so don’t fret.) So, get out there now in a hoodie and shorts before it is too late. It’s perhaps the easiest and coziest way to get a stylish fit off this season. Plus, it’s what Pharrell would want you to do.
