Prince William has been wearing his beard for a few months now—and while royal fans either love it or hate it (and whether or not it goes against royal protocol is a whole other thing), it had one very vocal detractor. During his final day in Cape Town, South Africa, William spoke about the divisive facial hair, saying that his daughter, Princess Charlotte, wasn't a fan, but it managed to, ahem, grow on her.
William has been in Africa for the Earthshot Prize awards and People reports that the conversation happened during a "candid interview" on the last day of his trip.
“Well, Charlotte didn’t like it the first time. I got floods of tears, the first one I got tears, so I had to shave it off," he explained. "Then, I grew it back. I thought, 'Hang on a second,' and I convinced her it was going to be okay."

When asked whether or not he agreed with people saying the beard made him look more relaxed and approachable, William revealed that the past year—which includes the time since the beard's debut in August—has been anything but relaxing.
"It's interesting you say that, because I couldn't be less relaxed this year, so it's very interesting you're all seeing that," he said. "But it's more a case of just crack on and you’ve got to keep going."

As the year comes to a close and the prince reflects on the ups, downs, and challenges that he's faced, he made sure to let royal fans know that he's keeping his priorities in line. Namely, that his family comes first, always.
"I enjoy my work, and I enjoy pacing myself and keeping sure that I have got time for my family, too," he said.
