Rihanna has once again teased that new music might be on the way, this time during an interview on the Met Gala red carpet.
It’s been nine years since Rihanna blessed us with a new album, having dropped Anti back in 2016. Since then, she’s been teasing a follow up album, R9, with fans eagerly anticipating its release. More than once, Entertainment Tonight has done the lord’s work and asked Rihanna the question on all our lips: is there new music coming, and if so… when? In June 2024, the singer and beauty mogul confirmed to Entertainment Tonight that work is underway on the new record – but it might be longer than expected before it hits our ears.
“I think that music, for me, is a new discovery,” she said. “I’m rediscovering things. I have been working on the album for so long that I kinda put all that stuff aside and now I’m prepared to go back in the studio. I’m gonna start — give me a second!”
She continued that she is “starting over” on the album, adding, “but I don’t want to neglect the stuff that I already have. So I want to go back and listen with new ears, with my new perspective, and then see what applies and what I’m still in love with.”
Fast forwarding to the first Monday in May, and Rihanna made global headlines when she soft launched her third pregnancy ahead of the red carpet. By the time she walked up The Met steps, fans were already singing a familiar tune on social media, questioning whether R9 will ever see the light of day. Wearing a custom Marc Jacobs look that moulded to her burgeoning baby bump, Rihanna was, of course, asked about this.
When Entertainment Tonight asked how she her third pregnancy was going, she was upbeat. “I’m good, I’m shockingly feeling okay and not too overwhelmed at the moment,” said Rihanna. Naturally the journalist then questioned Rihanna about her upcoming album, and specifically, whether the pregnancy would delay the album, which was reportedly in production. “No,” she said. “Maybe a few videos, but I could still sing.” So, there we have it, confirmation that, in theory, Rihanna could still produce and release her album while pregnant with her third child. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed.
When Will R9 Be Released?
On this point, sadly, your guess is as good as ours. Rihanna has previously hinted that new music is in production, but it seems that she loves to keep us on our toes. We’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available, of course.
Has Rihanna Retired From Music?
Prior to the 2024 interview with ET, the singer sent the internet into a spin when she stepped out in New York wearing a slogan tee that read, ‘I’m Retired.’
Unsurprisingly, X (formerly Twitter), was abuzz at these photos, with many fans speculating that the outfit was confirmation that R9 would never see the light of day.
But Rihanna has also put these rumours to rest, confirming to Extra that the outfit was nothing more than a fashion choice.
“I’m not retired. I just liked that [top]. I got it as a gift and I loved it.”
So, we suppose we can rest easily now knowing that new Rihanna goodness is on the way. However exactly when it will drop remains to be seen…
