Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. might credit “separate bathrooms” as the secret to their now 23-year-long marriage, but the former I Know What You Did Last Summer co-stars can also attribute a shared love of travel for keeping the adventure alive in their relationship. During an interview with People published on April 30, Gellar opened up about how she and Prinze Jr. integrate their passion for food into a surprising family travel tradition with their kids.

The couple—who welcomed daughter Charlotte Grace in 2009 and son Rocky James in 2012—“always, always” make sure to visit markets and book a local cooking class when they’re visiting a new place, the Buffy alum told People about their family’s favorite traveling activity.

For Gellar, who said she “couldn't afford to travel very much when I was growing up,” it’s a delicious way to bond as a family while learning about their destination’s culture.

“When I go to different places, I want to learn as much as I can about each culture and, and soak it in,” Gellar shared, adding, “And one of the best ways to learn about cultures is how they eat.” 

The Cruel Intentions star revealed her favorite cooking class memories, recalling, “We learned how to make pasta from scratch in a woman's home in Tuscany. We did pizza classes at a women's apartment in Florence. We've done cooking classes in Bali and Spain. I mean, you name it— everywhere we go, it's like our favorite thing to do.”

While Gellar was quick to emphasize she’s “not a chef” while opening up about her MyFitnessPal partnership (she revealed that she didn’t even know how to “boil water” until later in life), she and Prinze Jr. first bonded over a shared love of food.

The couple previously revealed that romantic sparks weren’t immediately there when Gellar and the She’s All That actor met on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, with Prinze Jr. telling Us Weekly in 2020, "I just wanted to be friends with her because I thought she was too skinny and I wanted to cook for her. Because that’s what my family does.”

After hosting several barbecues at Gellar’s home, the pair went out to dinner on a platonic date—and she quickly won him over with her appetite and willingness to try something unusual.

"A lot of girls back then in Hollywood—as far as the actresses—they didn't eat. They ate salad. I had gone on a date with a handful of them," he revealed during a 2016 Facebook Live. He explained, "Sarah came to dinner with me, and we sat down. She ate everything, including a crab that they let walk across the counter, then killed while it was alive in some oil and said, 'It's popcorn, try.'"
