The best fashion collaborations are the ones that work for reasons you can’t quite articulate. You want there to be some common ground, but enough distance to add that je ne sais quoi—French for, I believe, grail-worthy garments. Enter the forthcoming collaboration from Stüssy and Our Legacy Workshop, a collection feels like the perfect blending of two similar-but-different things.
Since the 1980s, Stüssy has been pumping out stylish, affordable threads that thread the needle between laid-back surfwear and attitude-heavy streetwear. Our Legacy, on the other hand, are the newer, punkish fashion weirdos who mix classic Scandinavian minimalism with psychedelic energy and anything-goes flair. Combine the two, and you have a collaboration that feels artful and covetable (and wearable!) enough to get you excited about the idea of collaborations again.
Work Shop is a sub-label within Our Legacy that focuses on remixing existing materials into modern designs and reworking old garments into something new. So, naturally, the collection combines deadstock Stüssy fabrics with Our Legacy’s eccentric, billowing silhouettes. (It goes the other way, too: with old Our Legacy materials being turned into Stüssy-designed garments.) Plainly speaking, this means striped button-ups, earthy plaid outerwear, and artful suiting in shapes I can only describe as “extremely relaxed.” The pants are slouchy, the blazers are roomy, and the oxford shirts are oversized—it’s Big Fits only here. The collaborative tag perhaps says it best: “These clothes are carefully designed to be worn big and have large amounts of fun in.”
Stüssy x Our Legacy is a sharp-witted way of taking years-old archival fabric and turning it to new, covetable clothing. Plus, a cult-loved menswear label from Sweden teaming up with a forefather of California streetwear is the cross-continental collaboration that doesn’t happen too often. Which is to say, get your hands on this stuff while you still can. It drops in-store this weekend, and online on August 28.
