When Sydney Sweeney said in an interview on Tuesday that she “would not be opposed” to starring in a Barbie sequel, it all made sense. The actor has had a busy year, with filming finally commencing on the third season of HBO’s Euphoria, and her upcoming promotional tour for thriller Eden (due for release on August 22).
You could say though, that both projects are on the more serious side, so when asked by Bustle whether she’d be interested in stepping into Barbieland alongside Margot Robbie, we were hardly surprised to see that she didn’t immediately shut down the idea.
“I’d have to read a script, but I’m a huge, huge fan of Margot [Robbie], so I would not be opposed to it,” she told Bustle. When the journalist posited that they could play sisters in a sequel film, she made it clear that she saw the vision, responding, “Me too”.
The idea isn’t as far fetched as you might immediately think. Just because Sweeney’s 2025 schedule is filled with thrillers and dramas, she’s certainly no stranger to a more tongue-in-cheek project. Of course, our minds immediately go to Anyone But You, the lighthearted romantic comedy that she starred in opposite Glen Powell.

In her personal life, she also doesn’t appear to take herself seriously, recently selling a men’s soap with her own bathwater in it. But with her status as a fashion girl, and particularly her ongoing relationship with Miu Miu, playing Barbie’s little sister is a role that just makes sense for the actor.
Of course, there’s still the question of whether there even will be a Barbie sequel. After bringing in a huge $1.4 billion USD at the box office, Barbie fans speculated that the Greta Gerwig film would get a sequel, in attempted to capture a similar success. And though Warner Bros. and the filmmakers deny it’s in the works, in late 2024, two sources confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that production was in “early stages”. That is, Gerwig and Noah Baumbach had apparently landed on the plot for a sequel.
