Taylor Swift has spent nearly twenty years building a romantic universe so elaborate that it doubles as a cultural archive, and within it, the wedding dress has appeared again and again—often at the apex of a storyline, or the punctuation mark to a love affair gone right or wrong. Swift is the master of blending art and life, and now, with the announcement of her engagement to boyfriend of two years Travis Kelce, the question of what she’ll wear down the aisle feels like the climax of a narrative the billionaire pop star has been spinning since she was a teenager.
Whatever gown Swift chooses will embody a cultural mythology that her fans have inhabited for nearly two decades, and we do not doubt that maisons will be competing to dress her for the day.
Over the years, Swift has had plenty of opportunity to showcase her penchant for making a statement with a gown, both on the red carpet and on stage. She’s favoured designers like Elie Saab, Vivienne Westwood, Oscar de la Renta, and Schiaparelli (do we hear Daniel Rosebery’s phone calling?). But Swift very well could surprise us with a boutique designer, just as she did when she and Kelce bypassed her usual jewellery houses, like Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, for a boutique New York designer when selecting her engagement ring.
While we’re in the dark about a designer, we can take notes on her bridal style from the many music videos in which she’s appeared.
Swift doesn’t favour any one silhouette, but she favours gowns that are as romantic and feminine as she is. Whatever she chooses, we know it will be special. Here are the dresses we can imagine her in based on some of her most captivating bridal looks.
Love Story

Many of us discovered Swift through “Love Story,” her 2008 fairy tale hit. For the music video, which sees Swift transformed from an ordinary college girl into a fairy-tale princess, Swift wore an off-the-shoulder dress, very much on trend for the romantic, medieval season we’re seeing in bridal fashion. The off-the-sleeve creation was designed by Valentino and featured a boned corset with lacing and a cascading skirt. Swift wore her hair in a whimsical updo with a chain necklace.

I Bet You Think About Me & Champagne Problems

In Taylor Swift’s very relatable “I Bet You Think About Me” she crashes her ex’s wedding, in a wedding gown. Designers Nicole + Felicia were the brains behind the two gowns worn in the music video, one of which was a traditional wedding dress featuring a train decked in 2,500 flower appliques, handmade with different shades of tulle, organza, and netting, which created highlights and depth that mimicked the natural irregularities of real flowers. Allegedly, Swift’s then stylist Joseph Cassell Falconer was almost brought to tears by the two dresses, one of which was a traditional white wedding gown, the second of which was a bold crimson.

Willow

Swift wore a simple slip dress from Zimmerman’s Fall 20 Ready To Wear collection for the “willow” music video, in which the singer time-travels in the name of love. While the silhouette was simple, the silk organza and guipure ruffled confection was still quintessentially Taylor and we can imagine a relaxed and lacy slip dress for her.

Fortnight

“Fortnight”, which appears on The Tortured Poets Department, is thought to be a mourning for Swift’s six-year relationship with ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn. In the music video, she wears a strapless white gown by Australian designer Toni Matičevski, with cage-like boning (the whimsical amongst us might suggest a wall around her heart). Swift wore a similar style by Schiaparelli to the 2024 Grammy Awards, and we’re feeling a structured moment for the Queen of Pop and soon-to-be first lady of the NFL.
