Whether you love her, hate her, or love to hate her, Gwyneth Paltrow is undoubtedly one celebrity we’re fascinated by. The actor turned wellness entrepreneur was a ’90s It Girl who was as recognisable for her acting as she was for her high profile relationships, but in recent years, she has capture and kept our attention thanks to her controversial opinions and gives-no-fucks attitude.
And soon, a biography will give us all the dirt on her life to date. The biography has been written by Amy Odell, who’s the author behind the Anna Wintour biography titled Anna, so we can be confident that we’ll be getting a true insider’s look into the life of Gwyneth Paltrow. The upcoming release (titled, of course, Gwyneth) pulls together the juiciest and most interesting parts of more than 220 interviews with the Goop founder‘s close friends and colleagues.
It’s worth noting that the book hasn’t been endorsed by Paltrow herself and she didn’t sit for an interview prior to publication.
Last week, we finally got our first look inside the biography, thanks to an exclusive excerpt given to People, and it’s definitely given us the reassurance that all of our juiciest questions about Paltrow’s life might be answered. Ahead, we round up our favourite moments from the excerpt.
Why Ben Affleck And Gwyneth Paltrow Broke Up
The book explains that Paltrow was very open about how great her sex life with Ben Affleck was, which is consistent with her recent interview on Call Her Daddy, Paltrow praised Affleck for being “technically excellent” in bed.

In the biography, Odell writes, that “she spoke openly about how much she enjoyed their sex life”, but explained that their “physical chemistry couldn’t overcome his self-destructive impulses, which may have even included cheating on her. After they broke up, Gwyneth said, ‘I love men, even though they’re lying, cheating scumbags.’”
The Controversy Around Her 1999 Oscars Win
In 1999, Paltrow won an Oscar for her role in Shakespeare in Love, but the occasion stirred up more than celebrations for the star’s win. Apparently, Paltrow had first turned down the role before she had even read the entire script, and though she did go on to star in the film, Winona Ryder was apparently being considered for the role at the same time.
There was a rumour swirling at the time that Paltrow had stolen the script of Ryder’s coffee table, but this is something Paltrow has consistently denied. “It was never sent to Winona as an offer, but Winona wanted to do the part and Gwyneth had recommended her for the part,” said [disgraced producer Harvey] Weinstein. As for the coffee table rumour, Paltrow apparently told friends that “Ryder had started the rumour, and insisted she’d received the script through her agent”.
What Ended Her Friendship With Madonna
Paltrow and Madonna became friends in the ’90s, when they regularly went on holidays and attended Kabbalah classes together. Many credit their mutual living situations (they lived in the UK at the same time) and British husbands as the reason they became close, but many have also wondered why they’re no longer friends.
“Their relationship reached a breaking point when Madonna showed up to an island where Gwyneth and [Chris] Martin were vacationing,” Odell writes in the biography. “Madonna seemed to know that Gwyneth would be there, which Gwyneth seemed to find strange, a friend remembered. Madonna then insisted Gwyneth and Martin join her for a big group dinner at a long table where Madonna went off on her daughter, Lourdes.”
As the story goes, apparently Paltrow and Martin were “disgusted by the behaviour”. “I can’t be around this woman anymore,” Martin told Paltrow. “She’s awful.” Apparently, Paltrow agreed that Madonna was “toxic” and ended the friendship.
The British A-Lister She Had A Crush On
While filming Emma, Paltrow apparently expressed that her current partner, Brad Pitt, might not be right for her and she explained that she had a crush on Hugh Grant. “Brad and I had very different upbringings,” Paltrow told an interviewer. “So when we go to restaurants and order caviar, I have to say to Brad, ‘This is beluga and this is osetra.’”
Did Gwyneth Paltrow Cheat On Brad Pitt?
Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt dated between 1994 and 1997, and were engaged in 1996, and their break up is one that Paltrow has spoken about previously. In 2015, she told Howard Stern, “I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me”. But don’t be fooled into thinking Paltrow only had sweet things to say about her ex-boyfriend. Apparently, Paltrow didn’t hold back during a business meeting with Aerin Lauder, allegedly telling the Estee Lauder heiress that “He’s dumber than a sack of shit.”

Like all relationship, there was obviously more to their break up than a simple, amicable parting of ways..
“After Emma came out, Gwyneth went over to [her friend and makeup artist Kevyn] Aucoin’s place and cried about Pitt multiple times. He wanted to be with her but seemed to feel threatened by her success and all the attention she received.” According to the biography, Aucoin had some honest advice for Paltrow: “You really need to end this,” they said.
Apparently there’s, well, even more. “Gwyneth and Pitt never publicly gave a concrete reason for their [1997] breakup, though two people recalled a rumour about it stemming from Gwyneth cheating on Pitt [with costar John Hannah] while she was filming Sliding Doors.”
