The Best Things We Bought This Year

Visits: 36

A fuzzy camera strap. Consistent pandemic solo strolls gave me good reason to bring my old Nikon F5 out of the closet. One of the first SLRs to be used by journalists in the field in the 1990s—she’s a tough old bird. And rather heavy! To pad my shoulder for the weight, and soften my recent years’ neglect, only a fluffy, flowered, pink Prada shoulder strap would do. Instead of a new handbag these days, I’ve got an accessorized Nikon. It has given me endless joy. — Codie Steensma

A killer kilt. My Chopova Lowena kilt, which I gazed upon for months but finally purchased after seeing Harry Styles in a similar one in the December issue of Vogue. It goes with every T-shirt, sweater, and mask I own. — Rachel Tashjian

Hard clothes. The ultimate waffle thermal from Man-tle. It’s super dense and heavy and cut oversized so that it’s almost sculptural. The fabric is dry and cozy but not too soft. Softness is the enemy. — Noah Johnson

A pettable sweater. The best Zoom light in my apartment is right in front of a drafty window. Lucky me: I picked up a fresh J. Press Shaggy Dog just before lockdown. You probably already know that these sweaters rule, but my super high-contrast grey heather is particularly righteous. The fibers range from bright white to perfect black, which gives it this shapeshifting quality—it sort of changes with the light. Totally accidentally, it became the perfect work-from-home layer on chilly days. It’s all of the ease and warmth of a jersey cotton crewneck sweatshirt, but with a little scratchy stiffness to remind me I’ve got work to do. — Chris Cohen

Future footwear. Ironically, I’ve worn the best piece of clothing I bought in 2020 exactly zero times. When lockdown hit in March, I assumed it would last a month or two at worst. So when I found a tasty deal on a pair of white Celine Jacno boots, I didn’t think twice—they would be my post-pandemic party boots. Well… they’re still sitting unworn in my closet. If I was sane I would have sold them on Grailed by now, but I want to wear them to the first vaxxed-up function too badly. And I will! — Samuel Hine

Fierce shorts. My 2020 style resolution was to wear more suits. I bought one early in the year. Then everything shut down, there was no reason to wear it, and that was that. So, locked inside during the year of being comfy, watching Tiger King, and being comfy while watching Tiger King, I bought these tiger-print John Elliot basketball shorts. I’ll be wearing them until I have to wear a suit again—and then probably for a little while after, too. — Clay Skipper

Next-level denim. My favorite purchase of the year was a pair of Lorod’s zip-through jeans, mostly because they’re very cool…but also because the denim is super soft; they’re the only jeans I work from home in. And I love supporting small, US designers! — Haley Gilbreath

Stretchy pants. The best piece of clothing I got in 2020 was a pair of Issey Miyake Homme Plissé trousers. They are perfect pandemic pants in that they make me look very elegant and put together, but also have the ability to stretch out like an accordion. In lieu of a fashion show this year, Issey Miyake put out a video that shows models dancing and leaping in their pleated pants and shorts. There is no better pitch for a pair of pants this year than that. — Cam Wolf
