The Watch World Is Seeing Red

Visits: 25

Welcome to Dialed In, where we’ll highlight the very best, most interesting, and coolest new watches in the world.

The watches:

  • Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Duoface Fagliano

  • Oris Big Crown Pointer Date x Fratello

  • Anordain Model 1 Plum Fumé

  • Rado Captain Cook

The single best thing about these watches: It appears that, in the course of developing their December releases, a number of watch companies were having the same thought. Maybe it’s the festive time of the year, the proximity to cranberry-sauce season, or the torrent of toyons (those little berries that dot mistletoe and liven up wreaths)—whatever the reason, everyone has a red-dialed watch to match. ’Tis the season to break out of the mold of black, white, or even navy dials and to try something with a dash more va-va-voom.

That’s a lot of red. You’re sharp. This year, watch collectors were served up a bolder and more vivacious palette than ever. Everyone from Rolex to Carl F. Bucherer to Nomos released whole collections of rainbow-colored watches. But there is something about this quartet of crimson watches that really gets the blood pumping: Red is the color of intense, fiery passion, or at least a souped-up sports car. A quick brush of the hue can turn any dull watch into something magnetic and romantic.

Just take a look at the Glasgow, Scotland–born Anordain Model 1. The brand built its reputation on making (relatively) affordable watches with mesmerizing dials. This one utilizes Anordain’s signature “Fumé” enamel dial, which makes it look like the red is bubbling up from a patch of fog, and which is created through a painstakingly meticulous process that involves applying layer after layer of enamel to the dial. Frodo could destroy the ring by throwing it into the center of this watch.
