In 2025, a good cup of coffee is a point of national pride for most Australians. After all, we (arguably) invented the now-globally popular flat white. (Sorry, New Zealand.) You only have to find yourself on one TikTok of someone travelling to Australia to see thousands of comments about how good our coffee is. But if you’ve stumbled across one of these videos, you’re definitely well-versed in the friendly (right?) rivalry that exists between Sydneysiders and Melburnians.
For people hailing from the southern state, their claim to having the best coffee in Australia is largely undisputed. In part, because no one else cares about who wins the title, but also because the city is known for serving an exceptional cup.
But while the coffee culture in Australian cities is world renowned, only one city reigns supreme. And while Sydney beat out Melbourne in 2024, the tables have turned this year. In fact, Melbourne went all the way and nabbed top spot, knocking Denmark off its elevated perch.
Food & Wine has has updated its ranking of the best cities in the world to get good coffee, and Melbourne has outranked Sydney as the top city, worldwide. The publication even credited the Victorian capital for expanding café food beyond a sad little muffin and for influencing major global cities like New York, which has a booming Aussie café scene.

Meanwhile, Sydney ranked number four, with Single O, Only Coffee Project, and Artificer earning special mentions. Those aren’t the only big changes to the list this year. San Francisco and Lisbon were absent altogether, and of course, Melbourne jumped all the way from tenth to first (much to the relief of Victorians, we’re sure).
The two cities stopping Sydney from joining Melbourne in the top two are Copenhagen and Amsterdam, fyi. Here’s the complete list.
