Instead of choosing a leader mutually, apparel leaders are returning to the culture of electing leaders through direct vote of members for Bangladesh ready-made garments manufacturers and exporters association (BGMEA).
As BGMEA is organizing elections for the next term, 3 separate panels are competing in this election. ‘Sammilita Parishad’ and ‘Forum’ and ‘Swadhinata Parishad’.
Giant Group Managing Director Faruque Hasan is leading the ‘Sammilita Parishad’ this time. Faruque Hasan was twice served as the Senior Vice President of BGMEA. While ABM Samsuddin, Managing Director of Hannan Group, has been nominated as the panel leader of the forum. Samsuddin was also been the Vice President of BGMEA twice.
On the other hand, Jahangir Alam, Managing Director of Design and Sources, is leading the Swadhinata Parishad.
According to the announced schedule, BGMEA elections will be held on Sunday, April 4. The schedule for the biennial election was announced on January 12.
Professor Farhat Anwar, Director, Institute of Business Administration, Dhaka University, is the Chairman of the Board of Directors. The members of the board are former president of Dhaka Chamber Abul Kashem Khan and vice president of Employers Federation Habibullah N Karim.
Faruque Hasan said the garment sector was going through a difficult time due to COVID-19. However, there is also an opportunity to turn this challenge into a possibility.
He wants to take new programs to bring the domestic and international situation in favor of the garment sector. Talks are underway with BGMEA seniors on what plans can be taken to turn the crisis into a possibility. He wants to move forward with the cooperation of all parties.
The number of BGMEA members is four and a half thousand. The final voter list will be released on February 23. February 25 is the last date for submission of nominations. On April 4, 35 directors will be elected by the general members.
