Valentino’s Trippy, Logo-Tattooed Faces Were an Optical Illusion

At today’s Valentino show in Paris, the house’s iconic VLogo print was everywhere, from head to toe—even becoming a face-first beauty statement. On top of imperceptibly perfected skin makeup artist Pat McGrath describes as “the new naked,” four otherwordly complexions served as a canvas for meticulously painted logo face tattoos

The linework required five hours of application, and was designed as “a symbolic representation of the iconic Valentino logo,” says McGrath, adding “a face tattoo twists the narrative, inviting us to unbox a new approach to beauty.” The legendary pro extended the print over lids and lips for a trippy optical illusion. And with or without the treatment, McGrath notes that the beauty theme was about individuality: “Every model’s natural beauty is spotlit.”

The cast hit the catwalk with an array of hair looks, including loose waves pushed behind ears, glossy curls, tight cornrows, and the occasional punk mohawk or blush bob that seemed to melt into designer Pierpaolo Piccioli’s tonal collection. “The models themselves are accentuated to their best,” says hairstylist Guido Palau of the gentle enhancements lent to their everyday hair. “There were just tweaks; there weren’t big statements.” After all, the select logomania-enhanced faces did plenty of the talking.
