The 2024 Venice Film Festival has arrived, and celebrities are here to serve (looks). While we may have just recovered from the glamour that filtered down the Cannes Film Festival, Venice, a city steeped in romance and history, is dialling up drama. We love a film festival because it promises a week’s worth of red-carpet looks from some of the world’s biggest stars and stylists. For fashion tragics, it’s almost comparable to the Olympics.
Some of the biggest films being celebrated this year feature our favourite stars. Jenna Ortega of Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice wall by strutting the red carpet, and Angelina Jolie, whose film Maria is debuting, has already delighted us. And, Lady Gaga will be taking to the red carpet with Joaquin Pheonix for Joker: Folie à Deux.
The annual event celebrating cinema kicked off on Wednesday, August 28th. La Biennale di Venezia organizes it, which will run until September 9th. We’ll be keeping our beady eyes on the red carpet throughout.
The Best Looks At The 2024 Venice Film Festival

Jung Ho-Yeon
In custom Louis Vuitton
The impeccable Jung Ho-Yeon wore a perfectly tailored and draped Louis Vuitton gown to match the red carpet.

Angelina Jolie
In custom Tamara Ralph
On August 29th, Jolie delighted us in custom Tamara Ralph. Her red lip and deconstructed 1940s waves perfectly complimented the old Hollywood look.

Taylor Russell
In custom Loewe and Tiffany & Co. jewellery
Taylor Russel looked perfectly La Dolce Vita in this sweeping chiffon number paired with her signature Tiffany & Co. bling.

Louis Partridge
Less Than Zero
Louis Partridge debuted his relationship with Olivia Rodrigo looking like a character in the famous 90s LA Bret Eastern Ellis novella Less Than Zero, the grey suit with a relaxed wide shirt collar and shades paired perfectly with Olivia Rodrigo’s black 90s slip dress.

Jenna Ortega
In custom Dior
We’re not always sold on cut-out dresses here at ELLE. But, Ortega showed us how it’s done in this backless number, making a rare deviation from her all-black Beetlejuice method-dressing.

Winona Ryder
In Chanel
Meanwhile, Ryder did indulge in some method-dressing in this gothic tulle-heavy confection.

Taylor Russell
In Chanel Spring/Summer 1993 couture and Tiffany & Co. jewellery
Taylor Russel showed us the power of archival dressing in this dramatic structured Chanel gown. Her slicked 1920s pixie cut and flushed cheeks tied the look together perfectly.

Monica Bellucci
Custom Vivienne Westwood
We’d clock a Vivienne Westwood snatched waist anywhere, and Belluci showed us why she’s a superstar in this diabolically saucy gown paired with giant shades.

Zhang Ziyi
FW24 Armani Privé.
Two words to describe this look? Devastatingly chic. Her art-deco Chopard earings are the pièce de résistance.

Taylor Russell
Archival John Galliano with Gianvito Rossi heels.
Taylor Russel’s stylist Jahleel Weaver has been working overtime pulling looks for Venice and, again, served a masterclass in making archival fashion totally contemporary. This Spring 1995 skirt suit was originally paired with Mary-Jane-style heels and a 1940s beauty look on the runway. Russel’s mesh pointed heels with wrap-around ankle ties and monochrome nude beauty look make it feel totally 2024.

Cate Blanchett
Armani Privé with Louis Vuitton pearls
Blanchett may as well trademark this exact shade of oyster-grey, accentuating the luminous column gown with a string of pearls around her shoulder. We’ll be marching pictures of her messy bob straight to our hair stylists. Impeccable.

Olivia Rodrigo
90’s Chic
So far, everyone has been too excited celebrating the happy couple’s debut to actually ID the designers they’re wearing – but Rodrigo’s black (possibly vintage) slip dress was the perfect compliment to boyfriend Louis Partridge’s 90s grey suit. We love the semi-transparent finish and 3D floral appliques.

Cate Blanchette
Armani Privé
It wouldn’t be Venice Film Festival without multiple Armani Privé looks from Cate Blanchette, and this velvet, backless suit is one for the books (there are entire Instagram accounts devoted to Blanchett’s penchant for fine tailoring).

Mariacarla Boscono
Custom Ann Demeulemeester by Stefano Gallici and Pomellato Jewellery
If you ask us, there’s not enough Ann Demeulemeester on the red carpet and supermodel Mariacarla Boscono is showing us why. Her chunky boots are the perfect compliment to her liquid silk cowl-necked gown, rough-hewn Gallici necklace, and gothic angel-wing headpiece. Colour us enamoured.
