Watch the First Digital Green Carpet Fashion Awards Here

Last month, we got a glimpse of what the first virtual Green Carpet Fashion Awards might look like. A high-resolution digital rendering depicted La Scala, the historic opera house in Milan, completely overgrown with flowers, greenery, and even a glittering waterfall. At the time, Livia Firth, the founder of Eco-Age (which works in partnership with the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana on the GCFA) said the idea was to create a “portal into a new era,” one where the fashion industry is more sustainable, equitable, and human. She teased that the digital GCFAs would also incorporate holograms, augmented reality, and special effects. Needless to say, it will be a lot more forward-thinking than the Zoom awards shows we’ve seen thus far.

Tonight, you can see it all play out in real time here. The digital Green Carpet Fashion Awards are streaming globally on YouTube via the Fashion Channel at 5:00pm EST (i.e., just a few minutes from now), transforming a once-exclusive event into one that literally anyone can “attend.” Robert Downey Jr. will introduce the show, and Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte will also make a special appearance. You’ll also be able to watch celebrities get ready at home via the “digital green carpet,” which is also launching shortly.

As for the awards themselves, we already know one winner: Zendaya, who is picking up the Visionary Award for her efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion in fashion and film. “She is a leading example for younger generations and beyond,” Firth says. The night’s four other awards will focus on the people who work behind the scenes to create fashion’s “handprint”—tailors, cobblers, embroideries, pattern makers, et al—as opposed to the global brands that typically win. “This year’s edition of the Green Carpet Fashion Awards wants to send a positive message of change and focuses on rebirth and solidarity necessary for a future under the banner of environmental and social justice, starting from Italy,” Carlo Capasa, president of the Camera della Moda, said in a release.
