This week, a documentary miniseries about the iconic ’00s reality show America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) was released, and to say people have been gripped by the harrowing stories from behind the scenes is an understatement. The documentary, which has been released in three parts, tracks the show through it’s entire 24-season run between 2003 and 2018.

For the uninitiated, ANTM was hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks and each season, a new crop of young women were cast to compete for a modelling contract. The judging panel was made up of other industry icons like runway coach J. Alexander, photographer Nigel Barker, and photo shoot director Jay Manuel. There was also a rotating roster of visiting judges, with regulars like Janice Dickinson, Kimora Lee Simmons, Twiggy, André Leon Talley, and Kelly Cutrone all making many appearances on the show.

The controversies surrounding ANTM have been uncovered time and again on social media in the past 10 years, as our society has shone a harsher light on the treatment of the contestants of ‘oos reality shows. Along with other controversial reality television shows like The Biggest Loser, the way contestants were spoken to, treated, and the positions they were put in have come under greater scrutiny.
But with Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, the scrutiny has been (rightfully) dialled up much higher. Over the course of the three-part docuseries, we hear from past judges, and yes, Tyra Banks herself, as well as contestants who were subjected to frankly heinous conditions while appearing on the show. More than just surviving controversies, contestants endured life-altering makeovers that included rushed dental work, fat-shaming, aggression, exploitation of past traumas, and racism, and one contestant even detailed an alleged sexual assault that took place while cameras were rolling. This is some dark stuff.

Just days after the release of Reality Check, former contestant Lisa D’Amato (who is not included in the Netflix docuseries), took to her Instagram to say she felt that even the most shocking revelations from the Netflix docuseries are “sugar coated”. “Watched the Netflix docu on antm and I still think it is sugar coated,” she wrote. “It was wayyyyyyy worse for so so many of us. March 11 on E! I said what I said and even deeper torture will be on Dirty Little Scandals. Stay tuned.” D’Amato has been posting regularly about the documentary series she has been working on with with the American broadcaster, and we’ll find out her side very soon.
For many millennials in particular, who grew up watching the show during formative years of their lives, watching the documentary on Netflix this week has been both shocking and triggering. But it’s also a show that punctuated many of our teen years, and if you’re as curious as we are to watch the docuseries, all of the details you need are below.
