Wind-Beaten Blush Is Now A Trend Thanks To Wuthering Heights

If we’re honest, we’re still not entirely sure how we felt about Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights. One thing we’re not confused about, though? Margot Robbie’s lush blush look. To depict Cathy, a woman caught in a sexual obsession with her former childhood playmate, Robbie wears a permanently rosy, flushed cheek throughout the film — evoking both the chill wind that rips through the wild moors of England and the heat that Jacob Elordi‘s Heathcliff puts in her face. “I have dreamt in my life, dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas; they have gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the color of my mind,” wrote Emily Brontë back in the late 1800s.

Makeup artist Siân Miller may have told Allure that she was particularly inspired by TikTok’s “pomegranate girl” trend for Margot Robbie’s blush, but the result captured the spirit of Catherine Linton’s plaintive cry. A translucent red that bloomedo on the skin under a sheen of sweat and looked positively post-coital (Miller said “wind swept”, we’ll agree to disagree). Whether the result of a harsh climate or over a decade’s worth of simmering sexual tension, Cathy’s flush is a universally flattering makeup moment. Red is the colour of blood, so no matter your skin tone, a red blush look will read as natural. It’s both suggestive and wholesome — you could have just had a romp on the moors or gone for a brisk run. Who’s to judge?

If you want to get the look, mimic the way your cheeks flush when you run or, er, romp. A quick search of “boy blush” on TikTok will give you a hand here — creators direct you to bring blush placement slightly lower on the cheeks for a more natural, lived-in effect.

Miller has fortunately shared the products from her kit, and they’re super accessible, combining textures for a look that’s pigmented but still glossy. She worked with a few different cream blushes to capture the variation of a natural flush: Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in Hope and Happy (AUD $39 each) — a cool mauve and a soft pink — followed by Merit Flush Balm in Après and Postmodern (AUD $42 each), a berry and a deep pink. To tie it all together she topped with No. 1 de Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm ($82), a sheer red wash that marries everything while lending the translucent sheen of real skin.

Isabella, played by Alicia Oliver, is the more innocent of the two, so Miller opted for something more matte and girlish — reaching for the Kylie Cosmetics Hybrid Blush in Winter Kissed (AUD $35).

The lip look is refreshingly affordable. There are no lipsticks, glazes or oils on the moors, so Cathy made do with Burt’s Bees Lip Balm in Rose ($12.47) — a sheer wash of colour and hydration that somehow feels exactly right.
