THE RUNDOWN
- Heidi Klum has started teasing her Halloween costume on Instagram, posting a pair of photos showing prosthetics that resemble human innards.
- Klum has hosted an annual Halloween party in New York City since 2000, with a strict “no costume, no entry” policy enforced.
- She has said her costume will be “bloody,” with the internet guessing she will be dressing as Demi Moore in the 2025 body horror film The Substance.
- Heidi Klum’s most expensive Halloween costume of all time was her 2016 “clone” look in which she had five models made up as Heidi Klum doppelgangers in prosthetics, wigs and matching costumes.
When it comes to costumes, no one holds a candle to Heidi Klum. Since 2000, the German supermodel, 54, has hosted an annual Halloween party in New York City, and over the last 26 years, has won herself the undisputed title of Halloween Queen. What started as a fun excuse to wear a costume but still look hot (the primary purpose of Halloween for many a late-teen, early-20s woman) has descended into a bizarre and occasionally alarming look inside Heidi Klum’s brain. Every year, her costumes become more outrageous than the last, growing so extreme in recent years that you can’t help but applaud (and also fear) her.
In 2013, she morphed into an elderly woman, complete with age-spotted skin and an alarmingly realistic wrinkled neck. In 2019, Klum was a bionic alien, all exposed organs and bloody reconstructed limbs. 2023 saw her recruit a troupe of Cirque du Soleil performers to help her transform into a peacock on the arrivals carpet, and 2026? Well, that remains to be seen, but she has offered up a few hints on Instagram, and it’s looking… gruesome.
“I will give you one clue,” Klum told Parade Magazine. “It’s bloody.” A week before Halloween, Klum posted a close-up photo to Instagram of what looked like a pile of organs. “What’s my costume?” she probed. The comments section became abuzz with guesses — an autopsy, a zombie, Ursula from The Little Mermaid. At the four-day countdown mark, Klum posted again, this time a lineup of large intestine-looking tentacles sitting on a table. The overwhelming prediction, according to the comments section at least, is that Klum will dress as Demi Moore in The Substance, 2024’s gruesome body horror film that saw Moore morph from a middle-aged woman into a 20-something Margaret Qualley via a stomach-turning transformation.
Klum, in typical form, has remained tight-lipped on her costume, leaving us to wait until she graces the carpet of her Halloween bash on Saturday, 31 October (or Sunday, 1 November for us in the Southern Hemisphere). Until then, we’re taking a look back at Klum’s most outrageous, unhinged and freaky costumes. Trick or treat.

2000
Dominatrix
The look that launched a thousand freaky Halloween costumes. At the inaugural edition of Heidi’s Halloween, the woman of the hour wore what is presumably a dominatrix-themed look. It’s hard to believe that a costume of this magnitude would soon become child’s play for Klum.

2001
Lady Godiva
The noblewoman famous for riding a horse nude, covered only by her hair, through the streets wouldn’t necessarily be our first choice for a costume, but that’s probably why Heidi Klum has a Halloween party named in her honour and we don’t.

2002
Betty Boop
At Dolce & Gabbana’s 2002 Halloween party, Klum took it down a notch and dressed (very convincingly) as the cartoon character Betty Boop.

2003
Undetermined golden reptile
The jury is still out on what Klum was going for here. The scales and spikes feel reptilian, but her hair feels more Grecian and the knee pads are giving volleyball player.

2004
A glamorous red witch piggy-backing a skeleton?
The witch part is clear, the skeleton part is… not. Regardless, the shredded multi-fabric dress and matching hat strike Halloween’s ever-so elusive sexy-scary balance.

2005
Victoria’s Secret-inspired vampire
You can’t tell me those wings weren’t inspired by Klum’s Victoria’s Secret Angel alter ego. This fashion vampire costume is almost certainly something they would send down the VS runway in a “Spooky Sexy”-themed segment, only with a little less coverage.

2006
Forbidden Fruit
You must respect Klum’s commitment to historical references. In 2006, she got biblical, and I can’t stop wondering whether she had those two-tone tights custom-made.

2007
Aggressive cat
Klum’s cat costume is on the less-extreme end of her Halloween costume spectrum, but her performance on the red carpet was off the charts.

2008
Kali, the Hindu goddess of death and time
Klum’s Kali ensemble is scary for two reasons: one, the skirt of severed arms, and two, its cultural insensitivity. 2008 was certainly a time.

2009
A crow
Klum’s crow outfit was positively low-key compared to last year’s costume. The beak hat is a nice touch though.

2010
Robot alien creature
For this out-of-the-box ensemble, Klum learnt how to walk on stilts. She told Parade Magazine, “I was red with purple hair, and I was on stilts, so I was like extra tall.” It seems like quite a length to go to for a costume, but we applaud her commitment to the bit.

2011
A human body
As part of Klum’s theatrical entrance to her party, a pair of “doctors” wheeled her onto the carpet on a hospital bed. She really was destined for the stage.

2012
Cleopatra
Klum may have cancelled her 2012 party due to Hurricane Sandy, but not even a major weather event can put a damper on her love of dressing up.

2013
Heidi Klum in 50 years
This might be one of Klum’s best looks to date. The veins in the legs? The wrinkled neck? The age-spotted skin? Her makeup artist deserves a raise.

2014
A butterfly
You can take the woman out of Victoria’s Secret, but you really can’t take the Victoria’s Secret out of the woman. Klum sure loves a pair of wings.

2015
Jessica Rabbit
A very convincing rendition of Jessica Rabbit from Klum here, right down to the plump face and like-for-like dress. She’s a master of the details.

2016
Heidi Klum
Oh, to get to a point in life when you can pay five lookalikes to dress up as you for Halloween. Interestingly, this 2016 clone look is Klum’s most expensive Halloween costume to date costing the supermodel approximately $10 million US dollars in wigs, prosthetics and matching outfits.

2017
The werewolf from Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’
I can only imagine how long she spent practising the dance.

2018
Fiona from Shrek
Who knew Klum was such a Shrek fan? A special shout-out must go to Klum’s now-husband Tom Kaulitz, who put in a valiant effort dressing as Shrek that evening.

2019
Bionic alien robot freak
I don’t understand one iota of this costume, but luckily, Klum’s husband, Tom Kaulitz, was on hand to explain it all to WWD on the carpet of the party: “Basically, we’re in outer space looking for a new planet for humans to live on because we have already destroyed ours,” he said. “I was out touring the universe and I found her. I found this creature and I was like ‘Wow she looks good,’ so I brought her home so hopefully she has some useful information for us.” I’m more confused than I was before.

2022
Worm
After a two-year hiatus during Covid, Klum returned to her hallowed Halloween carpet bigger and better than ever, dressed as a common garden worm.

2023
A peacock
It really does take a village, and for Klum’s 2023 costume, that village was a multi-person troupe from Cirque du Soleil, helping her execute an elaborate display of a peacock spreading its wings on the party carpet.

2024
E.T.
Look closely and you’ll see Klum’s eyes peeping out from E.T’s neck. I’m not sure whether the face prosthetics or the costume itself is most frightening.

2025
Medusa
In 2025, Klum took Medusa and made her even more terrifying, if that was even possible. Snake-like green contact lenses, a striped tongue extension and an elaborate updo of snakes might have made this her freakiest costume yet.
