The famous cobblestones of Copenhagen Fashion Week are back on our radar this week, with the Danish capital hosting its SS27 season through until August 7. The event which is rapidly cementing its status as fashion’s fifth major city, is marking its 20th anniversary this season. Copenhagen has become a hot spot for rising design talent, and for a third consecutive season, Danish jeweller Pandora returns as Headline Partner and Patron of CPHFW NEWTALENT, the initiative nurturing early-stage Scandinavian labels with funding, mentorship and industry connections. This season’s NEWTALENT designers are Anne Sofie Madsen and Stem, joined by newcomer Studio Constance (the scheme’s first Swedish label), while One To Watch honours go to Sson, Renè and Taus.
While the emerging Scandi designers at Copenhagen Fashion Week are always a drawcard, the street style is just as exciting. This time around it’s the spring/summer collections taking over the runway, and the Danes are enjoying summer. This aligns perfectly for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere who are eagerly planning our spring wardrobes and taking notes from the city’s photogenic denizens.
The Danes remain masters of accessorising, wielding stacked barrettes and bandanas with the same ease they bring to clashing prints, colours and textures. Crochet is everywhere this season, too, with matching headscarf-and-co-ord sets, oversized straw hats, and stacks of chunky beads doing the heavy lifting. The excitement around Mattheiu Blazy’s Chanel is being felt on the ground, you cannot swing a cat on the streets without hitting a well shod guest flashing accessories with interlocking C’s.
The sun-soaked capital has delivered tactile contrasts, craft-inspired accessories and imaginative takes on footwear, from toe-baring “freaky shoes” (we’re seeing plenty of jelly sandals and zebra prints) to slingback flats, thong heels, actual thongs and knee-high lace-up boots. And, aquamarine is replacing red as the season’s stand-out hue, turning up against camo-print jorts and hits of red all over the cobblestones.
