Cate Blanchett Tries Out This Season’s Most Divisive Accessory

Visits: 19

You can always rely on Cate Blanchett to push the style agenda. Never afraid to wear more adventurous or eccentric looks, the Oscar-nominated actor and her long-time stylist Elizabeth Stewart lead the way when it comes to theatrical fashion on the red carpet. This awards season in particular, however, they have also been demonstrating how to make more sustainable red carpet choices.

Last night was no different. Attending the Green Carpet Fashion Awards in Hollywood, Blanchett wore a custom Valentino haute couture suit, made from a mix of deadstock and archival fabrics from the atelier. The actor paired the mint green slouchy trouser suit—which featured striking black lapels on the blazer—with a tonal shirt and black court shoes. It’s the small details that give the look its quirky edge, however, with Blanchett wearing a giant pink bow on her left hip as well as the stand-out accessory from the fall 2023 shows: a black tie.

Ties might make you think of Avril Lavigne in her “Sk8er Boi” era, but they were one of the key accessory trends this fashion month. At Alexander McQueen, Valentino, and Dior they added an important styling note to the collection, with ties either tucked neatly under outerwear or left loose to hang over the waistband of trousers. Given it was one of the more divisive trends to emerge this fall, it’s no surprise that Blanchett is one of the first celebrities to try it on the red carpet.

It makes sense, too, that Blanchett was one of the co-chairs of the Green Carpet Fashion Awards this year, given her increasingly environmentally conscious approach to dressing for premieres and events. At the SAG Awards in February, for example, she wore an Armani Privé gown that featured repurposed lace on the neckline from a dress she wore in 2014 and 2018.
