What do you get when Christian Louboutin, John Galliano and Dita Von Teese join forces? A bedazzled, campy, burlesque extravaganza to celebrate Christian Louboutin’s latest collection, Eternal Youth, is what.
Not officially on the Paris Fashion Week calendar (but a welcome addition to attendees’ stacked schedules, no doubt), the show was a glamorous, joyful ode to one of Christian Louboutin’s most iconic shoe silhouettes, La Pigalle. The pump — pointed toe, vertiginous heel, notoriously challenging to strut in — formed the basis of the Eternal Youth collection, only levelled up with a few glamorous additions. In one case, a Mary Jane strap was added across the foot and the entire shoe was covered in glittering strass, a high-lead paste made to emulate precious gemstones. In another, the shoe’s topline was trimmed with dainty strands of beads while other pairs sported satin ribbon wound around the ankle ballet slipper-like.

Shoes of this voltage called for a celebration equally as over-the-top. Who else to tap, then, than famed burlesque performer, Dita Von Teese? And when it came to costumes, there was no one more qualified than the king of theatrical fashion, John Galliano, who lent his talent to a handful of the looks alongside legendary corsetmaker Mr. Pearl and milliner Stephen Jones. In collaboration with a starry cast of set designers, conductors, directors and choreographers, Von Teese starred in a show inspired both by the collection and the concept of glamour.

It wasn’t the idea of glamour we have today, though. Originally, “glamour” was used to describe a power capable of transforming the way we perceived the world — a spell, a kind of magic. It was this version of glamour that was the launchpad for Christian Louboutin’s show, reimagining the tale of Snow White so that the protagonist wasn’t a damsel in distress but rather, a woman in charge of her own destiny. And with the right shoes to help her do it, to boot.

The lineup of guests was almost as sparkly as Von Teese’s Mr. Pearl-designed corsets: Elizabeth Debicki, Maya Jama, Cynthia Erivo and Jaden Smith, who is the Men’s Creative Director for Christian Louboutin, were all present to watch the spectacle unfold. It was a tonic to the week’s more serious side, in true Christian Louboutin fashion.
