Warning: This story contains spoilers for the first season of And Just Like That.
And Just Like That is no stranger to an on-set paparazzi photo. At this point, photos being leaked from filming on the streets of New York City are part of each season’s promotional strategy. Usually, they offer us a glimpse into the upcoming style choices for Carrie Bradshaw, but every so often, a bigger plot point is teased. And that’s exactly how people started speculating that Steve Brady may be killed off in season three.
Let’s rewind. When yet another Sex and the City reboot was announced in 2021, we were whelmed to say the least. Having already revisited the worlds of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte in two separate movies, most of us were left wondering what more we could get out of another reboot. But, consider us proven wrong because now that we’re well into the third season of said reboot, And Just Like That, we’re kind of on board. The first season kicked off with an absolute bombshell, with Mr Big suddenly dying, and with paparazzi shots being released from the set featuring the cast, sans Steve, in funeral garb, we’re wondering if another death is coming our way.

During filming for the third season last July, the internet went into overdrive when several cast members were snapped dressed entirely in black, suggesting they may have been gathering for a funeral.
Naturally, fans immediately did the maths of exactly who was in the picture – and importantly, who was not – in an attempt to work out whose funeral they were attending. Here’s where things get intense. Steve Brady (David Eigenberg) was nowhere to be seen. And so the most heart-breaking theory of all was born: that Steve dies in season three of AJLT.

While it’s all entirely speculative (for now), if season three does kill off Steve, it would be the end of a fairly sad story line for this once beloved character.
In Sex And The City (the prequel to AJLT), Steve was portrayed as sweet, straightforward, and always reliable to his on-again-off-again girlfriend-turned-wife Miranda (Cynthia Nixon). While their relationship was certainly not free from turmoil, when compared to the escapades of some of the show’s other boyfriends – Big, Trey, and Richard, to name a few – Steve was pretty close to perfect.

Which is why fans of the original series were less than impressed with the character’s treatment in AJLT. The ageing man who constantly bored and annoyed Miranda was a stark contrast to the consistently kind Steve we grew to love during the six-season run of SATC. Even worse, the series evolved into Miranda having an affair with comedian Che and ultimately ending her marriage with Steve in search of “more”.
Who Dies In And Just Like That… Season Three?
Of course, it’s also entirely possible that some other character could have suffered a terrible twist of fate. If that’s the case, it’s also likely that Steve just didn’t score an invite to the funeral, having been absent for much of season two due to his divorce from Miranda.
Some have speculated that the funeral could actually be for Carrie’s best friend Stanford after Willie Garson, the actor responsible for bringing this loveable character to life, died in September 2021. So far, the writers have dealt with this by having Stanford jet off to Japan to tour with a teen TikTok star.

Another possible – though almost unspeakable – explanation is that Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) has been killed off. The iconic character, who was a fan-favourite in Sex And The City, declined to join the sequel, citing differences with Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie, as the primary reason.

Despite making a (very brief) phone cameo in season two, Cattrall took to X to confirm that she wouldn’t be on board for season three. Could her character’s death be the reason?
If the writers want to stay true to the original series, it’s also entirely possible that the funeral will be for one of the colourful characters that exist on the periphery of the core SATC storyline. In a 2004 episode titled ‘Splat”, Lexi Featherston (played by Kristen Johnston) dies after falling out a window during a party. The death is memorable thanks to the sudden nature of her death and also her final words of, “New York is over!”, which she yelled to the room before falling out the window.
It’s impossible to know whether poor Steve will die, another iconic character, or someone who we don’t even know yet. One thing’s for sure though, we’ll certainly be tuning in to see.
