BRUSSELS – The European Commission has updated test methods for azo dyes that may be found in textiles as part of its harmonisation efforts on REACH chemical regulations with respect to restricted carcinogenic, mutagenic or reproductive toxicant (CMR) substances.

The EU reported last week that it has now updated Appendix 10 to Annex XVII (restricted substances) of the REACH Regulation to list new testing methods for azocolorants to replace previous outdated techniques.

Among a raft of new changes that impact on the textile sector, Annex XVII to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 lay down further restrictions on perfluorooctanoic acid (widely known as C8) and its salts, changes to the way banned surfactants in the nonylphenols group are identified.

The new changes [Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/2096] were published on December 16th, 2020.
