Fashion homeworkers ‘paid less than min wage’

PORT LOUIS – Nine out of 10 women working from home in the apparel industry in India, Nepal and Pakistan earn less than the minimum wage, according to a new study from the HomeNet South Asia network.

The organisation, which represents homeworkers across South Asia, also says that most homeworkers have no access to basic social security protections such as sick pay, pension and paid leave.

HomeNet South Asia’s report, entitled ‘Working From Home: The Decent Work Deficit of Homeworkers in Selected Cities in South Asia’, is calling for fair pay, regular work and basic social protections for fashion homeworkers.
