Fashion Month Made Me Want To Bejewel Everything I Own

The Dries Van Noten show for spring/summer 2027 was a magpie’s delight. From the very first look — a graphic printed dress, a camel coat and strands of glossy, patterned beads around the neck — creative director Julian Klausner’s message was clear: shiny things are for everyday.

The show continued in a deliciously bejewelled fashion: glittering brooches on hips and collars; gems encrusting shoes and ears; beads adorning weighty skirts. By the time it ended, I had had an epiphany. This party season, I want to be bejewelled like one of Dries’ girls.

Typically, I don’t gravitate toward sparkles. Sequins don’t have a place in my wardrobe, nor does glitter. I’ll accept a metallic element here and there — either on a bag or a shoe — but I tend to prefer jewellery. However, something about the richness of Dries Van Noten’s bejewelling, the eclectic, treasure chest feel of the entire collection lit up the pleasure centre in my brain. My reaction to the show was akin to how I would feel looking into a kaleidoscope as a child: delighted and overwhelmed by its iridescent magic.

Klausner wasn’t the only designer channelling Christian Lacroix — the French fashion designer renowned for his opulent, textural pieces. At Miu Miu, Miuccia Prada took bejewelling in an unexpected direction, fusing embellishment with sportswear influences across mini dresses, bralettes and patterned skirts. Some of the pieces were made from neoprene, others, like the bralettes, were worn atop rash vests or with swim shorts. After all, subverting expectations and redefining what looks “good” is Mrs. Prada’s M.O. Burberry did it too, adorning trenches, skirts and bags with smatterings of plump, glossy beads.

From where I’m sitting, bejewelling is the edgier, sparkle-averse answer to party season dressing. Sophia Stamallos, ELLE’s fashion editor, thinks so too. “The bejewelled trend feels a lot more tactile and less feminine than your typical sequin or sparkle,” she says. “It’s a trend that you can be more maximal with.”

That’s not to say you need to go overboard with it. In fact, according to Stamallos, bejewelled pieces have more impact if they’re worn sparingly and in unexpected ways. “Stick with classic shapes and cool silhouettes to bring it back down to earth,” she says. “A bejewelled brooch is a great place to start as you can add it to any outfit — it could be a great addition to a blazer, a simple T-shirt or even a bag.”

Denim is another less-obvious way to dip your toe into the trend. “We’ve seen some embellished jeans come out lately, which is a nice dressed-down way to work bejewelling into everyday outfits,” Stamallos says. If you’re not quite ready to go full throttle (read: bejewelling your entire lower half), start small with accessories. “I love an embellished bag or shoe. It doesn’t interrupt your outfit too much and isn’t the biggest investment, plus, it’s a great way of being able to change up looks in your wardrobe without compromising your usual style.”
